June’s Amputee Support Group!
What makes San Antonio Amputee Foundation’s support group so unique is the diverse makeup in terms of ages, levels & causes of amputation, and where our members are physically and emotionally. At yesterday’s meeting, our youngest was 15 and oldest was 81, one member walking into the meeting with their new prosthesis, and we had a large number in attendance who have lost multiple limbs to sepsis.
Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs when the body’s response to an infection damages its own tissues and organs.
As sepsis worsens, the body centralizes its blood flow to protect vital organs, depriving extremities of necessary oxygen. And without adequate blood flow and oxygen, tissues in the fingers, toes, hands, and feet begin to die and become necrotic. Amputation, usually multiple amputations, happens to stop the necrotic tissue from poisoning the rest of the patient's body.

This group is filled with resilient survivors who are living proof that while life can change in an instant, it doesn’t take away our ability to thrive and find a new purpose. As the leader of this incredible tribe, month after month, I am grateful as they show up, not just for themselves, but also for one another. 🥰
