June’s Amputee Support Group!

What makes San Antonio Amputee Foundation’s support group so unique is the diverse makeup in terms of ages, levels & causes of amputation, and where our members are physically and emotionally. At yesterday’s meeting, our youngest was 15 and oldest was 81, one member walking into the meeting with their new prosthesis, and we had a large number in attendance who have lost multiple limbs to sepsis.

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency that occurs when the body’s response to an infection damages its own tissues and organs.

As sepsis worsens, the body centralizes its blood flow to protect vital organs, depriving extremities of necessary oxygen. And without adequate blood flow and oxygen, tissues in the fingers, toes, hands, and feet begin to die and become necrotic. Amputation, usually multiple amputations, happens to stop the necrotic tissue from poisoning the rest of the patient's body.

This group is filled with resilient survivors who are living proof that while life can change in an instant, it doesn’t take away our ability to thrive and find a new purpose. As the leader of this incredible tribe, month after month, I am grateful as they show up, not just for themselves, but also for one another. 🥰

SAAF hosted another Amputee Swim Clinic in partnership with Master Swim Coach Susan Ingraham and it was nothing short of absolutely inspiring! A day that reminded us that reclaiming pieces of ourselves after trauma is not always easy, but it is so very possible.

For many in our tribe, this was their first time back in the water since their amputation(s). Five navigated the pool with bilateral leg amputations. Most everyone faced fears and uncertainties that had kept them away from the water for years.

Tammy’s story touched all of us deeply. A former Division I swimmer at the University of Arizona who lost all four limbs to sepsis returned to the water for the first time since becoming an amputee.

We are incredibly grateful to Susan Ingraham and our amazing volunteer coaches who generously shared their time, expertise, patience, and encouragement. Many told us afterward that they received just as much, if not more, from the experience than the amputees themselves.

At SAAF, our mission is about restoring confidence, rebuilding independence, and helping people rediscover what is still possible! And we love every single second of what we do in serving our limb loss community!

We hosted our 10th Annual Horseback Riding Event. 35 incredible individuals showed up with courage, curiosity, and heart! A kind of bravery that does not go unnoticed.

We had first-time ever riders. We had first-time riders after amputation. We had Justin, month month post-amputation who showed up and got on that horse. Was Justin scared to be on a horse as new amputees? Absolutely. Resilience doesn’t mean living without fear, it means rising to thrive despite the fear. It means doing all the things with courage. It’s a choice.

With the support of eight amazing volunteer physical & occupational therapists, every rider was safely assisted on and off the horses, making this experience possible for all ability levels.

And a huge thank you to County Judge Peter Sakai for sponsoring this year’s event. So much gratitude to Judge for his continued belief in SAAF’s mission.

At its core, this event reflects the mission of SAAF-creating opportunities that Foster independence, strength, resilience, and community for individuals living with limb loss.

If you’d like to support SAAF in some way, maybe sponsor an event, we’d love to connect. 🧡
