A Story of Sacrifice at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery

This group headstone honors five heroes who lost their lives on September 4, 1967, when their C-123K aircraft struck a mountain in bad weather while descending prematurely near Bao Loc, Vietnam.

Given the limitations of identification technology in 1967, individual separation of remains was impossible after such an impact. As a result, these flight crew members and passengers—four U.S. Air Force airmen and one Royal Thai Air Force master sergeant—were laid to rest together in a shared grave:

✈️ Lt. Col. Merle D. Turner – Aircraft Commander / Pilot (USAF)
✈️ Capt. Edward L. Goucher – Co-Pilot (USAF)
🪂 MSgt. Charles A. Paradise – Combat Controller (USAF)
🪂 TSgt. Fredrick L. Thrower – Combat Controller (USAF)
🇹🇭 MSgt. Pratuang Srisawat – Flight Observer (Royal Thai Air Force)

Together in service, together in rest. We remember their sacrifice. 🫡

23 Sep 2026 - 🇺🇸 We bid farewell to fellow MSD member Jon Brown as he relocates to another Texas community.

Jon proudly served with the Wednesday Squad and the Memorial Services Detachment for 9½ years. He served as the detachment historian and coordinated the Fort Sam Houston Public Information Center. During his time with us, he helped provide military honors for more than 2,500 Veterans and participated in ceremonies at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery and throughout our community. 🫡

Thank you for your years of service, Jon. We wish you all the best in this next chapter. You will be missed. 💙

The Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery continues to photograph headstones and record gravesite locations so families can find and honor their loved ones through the Veterans Legacy Memorial (VLM). As this work is completed, headstone photos and map locations are added to Veterans’ memorial pages.

If you’re looking for a loved one, search the Veterans Legacy Memorial at www.vlm.cem.va.gov. Gravesite details and photos may be available on their page.

Thank you to these dedicated professionals for caring for our Veterans’ resting places and helping preserve their legacies online. 🇺🇸

Routine Maintenance at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery

The work currently taking place at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery is part of routine grounds maintenance. Crews are realigning headstones and installing new turf to maintain the cemetery’s precise, dignified, and well-kept appearance.

This important work helps preserve the sacred grounds where our veterans and their loved ones rest.
