🇺🇸 Honoring Our Unaccompanied Veterans 🇺🇸

This week, the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery community came together to ensure that six unaccompanied Veterans were laid to rest with the dignity, honor, and respect they earned through their service to our nation.

A heartfelt thank you to the Bexar County Department of Military & Veterans Services, the Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, Amazing Grace Doves of San Antonio, the Patriot Guard Riders, and everyone who attended. Your presence ensured these Veterans were not alone and that their service will never be forgotten.

Together, we demonstrated that no Veteran is ever forgotten.

🎖 Honoring 10 Years of Dedicated Service! 🇺🇸

Today, we had the privilege of recognizing two outstanding members of the Memorial Services Detachment (MSD) for their unwavering commitment to honoring our nation's Veterans.

👏 Manuel Valdez was presented with his 10-Year Service Pin in recognition of a decade of faithful service with the MSD.

👏 Alex Estrada was also recognized with his 10-Year Service Pin and received a Department of Veterans Affairs Certificate of Appreciation for completing 10 years of volunteer service while contributing an incredible 2,826 volunteer hours at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.

To top it all off, Alex was surprised with a Spider-Man T-shirt! 🕷️🕸️ After all, he recently tried to channel his inner superhero by climbing onto his roof to chase away a raccoon... unfortunately, the raccoon won that round. Alex took a fall, broke his foot, and is now recovering with a good story to tell! 😂 Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Please join us as we honor veterans who served our nation and were laid to rest without family present at their funeral services. No veteran should ever be forgotten.

Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, in partnership with the Bexar County Department of Military and Veterans Services, will host a memorial service with full military honors provided by the Wednesday Squad, Memorial Services Detachment.

🇺🇸 DID YOU KNOW? – Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery History 🇺🇸 🇩🇪 🇮🇹 🇯🇵 🇦🇹

Most visitors to Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery are unaware that the cemetery contains a section dedicated to enemy prisoners of war (POWs) from World War II.

During WWII, Texas operated approximately 70 POW camps that housed more than 50,000 German, Italian, and Japanese prisoners. After the war, the remains of POWs who died while in U.S. custody were consolidated from various locations and reinterred at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in Section ZA.

Today, Section ZA contains the graves of 141 former POWs, including 133 Germans, 5 Italians, 3 Japanese, and 1 Austrian. Their burials reflect America's long-standing commitment to honoring international agreements and treating all war dead with dignity and respect.

As members of the Wednesday Squad, we honor all who rest at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery and help preserve the history that many visitors may never know exists.

Please join us as we honor our Unaccompanied Veterans—men and women who faithfully served our nation and are laid to rest without family present at their funeral services. These heroes deserve to be remembered, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure they are never alone.

Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, in partnership with the Bexar County Department of Military and Veterans Services, will host a memorial service in tribute to these veterans. Full military honors will be rendered by the Wednesday Squad, Memorial Services Detachment.
