Mucho antes de las misiones, los presidios y la ciudad que conocemos hoy, los pueblos indígenas vivían, viajaban, se reunían, cazaban y construían comunidades a lo largo de estas tierras.

Cuando los exploradores españoles llegaron a la región en 1691, se encontraron con el pueblo Payaya viviendo en las orillas del río. Los registros históricos conservan Yanaguana como un nombre Payaya asociado a este lugar y al Río San Antonio. Los Payaya hablaban una lengua coahuilteca y habitaban una zona que se extendía desde el actual San Antonio hasta el Río Frío.

Este Día de los Pueblos Indígenas, honramos a los pueblos indígenas cuyas historias forman parte de la historia de San Antonio, y abrimos espacio para que la próxima generación aprenda esa historia de manera más completa.

Long before missions, presidios, and the city we know today, Indigenous people lived, traveled, gathered, hunted, and built communities across this land.

When Spanish explorers arrived in the area in 1691, they encountered the Payaya people living along the river. Historical records preserve Yanaguana as a Payaya name associated with this place and the San Antonio River. The Payaya spoke a Coahuiltecan language and lived across an area stretching from present-day San Antonio toward the Frio River.

This Indigenous Peoples' Day, we honor the Indigenous peoples whose histories are part of San Antonio's story—and make space for the next generation to learn that story more fully.
