American Indians in Texas - Spanish Colonial Missions

American Indians in Texas - Spanish Colonial Missions AIT-SCM supports ALL Indigenous peoples in Texas. Native family health and wellness support, community engagement, and cultural arts!

Mission Statement

The American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions (AIT-SCM) is a nonprofit organization established by the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation, descendants of the aboriginal people who populated South Texas and Northeast Mexico. The organization works for the preservation and protection of the culture and traditions of the Native American tribes and other Indigenous people who resided in the Spanish colonial missions.

Tonight, as the Spurs begin their Finals run, we’re thinking about Native American Heritage Night and the gift of seeing ourselves reflected on the court.

For Indigenous youth, seeing someone like Lindy Waters III succeed at the highest level while remaining rooted in who he is, carries a kind of medicine that can’t be measured.

What is sacred must be seen. What is seen can inspire.

Wishing Lindy, our Spurs, and the entire organization a great game tonight. We’re cheering you on from the office!

Beginning next week, we will gather each day for our MMIWP Week of Action to honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People, an ongoing and urgent crisis impacting our communities.

This time calls us beyond awareness and into action. We come together to name the realities of the MMIWP crisis, uplift the voices of families and communities, and demand accountability at every level.

Over the course of these five days, a series of events will bring us into community through shared space, dialogue, and action. Each gathering is meant to support healing and build the collective power needed to push for justice, visibility, and lasting change in protecting our relatives across Turtle Island.

Swipe through to see what’s happening each day and how you can join us in honoring our relatives.

In celebration of National Poetry Month, we’re honoring storytelling as a powerful form of poetry🤍

Join us this April for two live Story Time with Grandma Coyote, Emma Ortega episodes, where each story is more than words; it’s a lesson, a memory, and a reflection of how we live and learn through our traditions.

Poetry lives in our voices, our stories, and our community here in San Antonio!

Tune in on our instagram and Facebook around 1PM and follow along on our socials and so you don’t miss these special moments of storytelling and connection!

Pow wow season is HERE, y’all! It’s time to stretch those legs, dust off your regalia (or your best pow wow fit), and show up ready for community fun and cultural celebrations ✨

As the Texas sun starts warming up, so do our spirits. All across the state, relatives are gathering to sing, laugh, dance, reconnect, and celebrate community; and trust us, you don’t want to miss that feeling.

Join us April 18 at the United San Antonio Pow Wow: Celebration of Traditions 🤎 Whether you’re coming for the dancing, the drums, the laughter, or just to be surrounded by good people—there’s a place for you there.

And yes… we KNOW you’re already thinking about the food 👀

AITSCM will be holding it down with our fry bread pop-up: serving up hot, fresh Indian tacos all day long

Come find us, say hi, and grab a plate (or two… we won’t judge).

Want to be part of the magic behind the scenes? We’re looking for volunteers to help us prep the day before and work shifts on April 18. No experience needed; just bring a good attitude, a little energy, and maybe a love for fry bread

Can’t make this one, or looking for more pow wows near you? Swipe through to see other amazing gatherings happening across Texas.

This place has always been sacred.

On April 6, we gather for Native American Heritage Night with the San Antonio Spurs — centered around a message we carry with us every day: Sacred Like Me.

Being in community is sacred.
The land we share is sacred.
And you yourself are sacred too.

This night honors the living presence, resilience, and cultural legacy of Native people in San Antonio while inviting all of us to reflect on what we hold sacred and how we care for it.

Join us for a special pregame experience featuring Native vendors, art, and community.

Interested in being a vendor? Send us a DM with your info and email to be considered.

If you haven’t already, sign up for our newsletter to receive exclusive updates and the ticket link for the night!

Limited-edition Sacred Like Me jerseys will also be available in the fan shop — a wearable reminder of this message and moment.

What you cherish is sacred.
What is sacred must be cared for.
