Below is our First Friday Workshops for September 7th.
Morning Session (9:00am – 12:00pm):
Self-Care for the Professional
Working in the substance abuse field can be very demanding. With such a demand for services, life for the professional can turn in to work, work, work, leaving little to no room for self-care. This workshop will point out symptoms of burnout and stress. Participants will also address actions that can be taken to avoid burnout and stress. Emotional health and appropriate boundary setting with clients will be discussed. Come join Loreen Button as she defines procedures to take if you feel you have already waited too long.
Presenter: Loreen Button, MS, LPC, LCDC
Loreen has been a counselor at the Palmer Drug Abuse Program for almost 3 years. She received her Master’s in Guidance in Counseling from Texas A&M. She attended UTSA for some post graduate training in the area of counseling. She is also trained to use the SASSIE.
Afternoon Session (1:30pm – 4:30pm):
Aromatherapy as a Behavioral Intervention:
Research and Practice
Essential oils have been valued as natural healers for both mind and body. In this workshop, participants will learn how the chemical structure of these oils works with the body to produce positive changes in stress levels and emotions. Dr. Kurtin, who makes the basic chemistry both understandable and useful, will describe current research in the field. Lyn Belisle will demonstrate techniques for de-stressing both client and therapist and will suggest formulas and specific essential oils for healing practices. Participants will have the chance to work with some common essential oils and acquire resources for further study.
Presenter: William Kurtin, Ph.D. and Lyn Belisle, MA C.A
Dr. Kurtin received his B.A. in chemistry at University of St. Thomas Houston, TX and a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Texas Tech University. Lyn Belisle is a certified aroma therapist and is also state-certified in E.D. Special Education. She is the author of numerous articles on essential plants and oils and has taught classes and presented to hospice groups, and community education students for 25 years. For the past 10 years, they have been involved in teaching and research collaboration on the science and use of aromatherapy.
