SAMSAT is to become a world-class science center, an innovation incubator and home to a major collection of never-before-seen technological artifacts, a fascinating hub for today’s dreamers in San Antonio and beyond. We made the progressive decision to place all our artifacts in storage while we plan for our next new home. SAMSAT will explore the fascinating roots of technology we use every day, promoting STEM education for the high-skill jobs of our knowledge economy and increasing interest in science and tech careers. Did you know that our San Antonio river was originally named Yanaguana by the Payaya people? It means: “Land of the Spirit Waters”. The Payaya people were a band from the large Tāp Pīlam Coahuiltecan Nation, which was a culture spanning from North Mexico to South Texas. Around 30,000 indigenous people living in San Antonio today are descended from these tribes. You can support The American Indians in Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions (AIT-SCM) at aitscm.org. SAMSAT recognizes Indigenous People’s Day, and are driven to see technology improve human lives in the South Texas region.

During the field trip, we’ll share information on education pathways selected by the school, including courses specific to that school, extracurricular, financial resources, and more, in a format useful to students and that can go home to parents. Your contributions help SAMSAT help our youth grow into strong and smart leaders.

If you want to be further involved in inspiring youth through innovative pathways, join us next month for our Annual Fundraiser.

We highlight STEM fields through our city funded programs like SA Smart Challenge, and we engage the skills your gamer kids have with R20 Premier Esports. Our free museum SAMSAT AREA 21(r) is open 7 days a week and is a great way to explore STEM with your family and friends.

International Space Week this year is October 4th-10th. Space Week was created by the United Nations in 1999 to celebrate space innovation for the betterment of humanity. Simultaneously this week commemorates the launching of the first man-made Satellite, Sputnik 1 in October 1957 and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty in October 1967.

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope’s NIRCam and MIRI instruments recently imaged planetary nebula NGC 2392, which is nicknamed the Lion Nebula due to its distinct shape. This near- and mid-infrared composite image reveals the complex structure of the nebula, which has formed and continues to be sculpted by the remains of a dying star. The stellar core, also known as a white dwarf, is located at the center and looks like the button nose of the lion. The central dying star is so hot that its radiation is “cooking” everything from the inside and producing a bubble of ionized hydrogen gas as it does. The gas bubble, which is the lion’s “face,” features cavernous shells and rings with tendrils that are expanding and destroying dust upon encounter. The Lion Nebula is a snapshot in time. It’s taken several thousand years for the gas and dust to be shaped in this way, and it continues to change as the star drives away the material. Astronomers estimate NGC 2392 will eventually disperse in about 10,000 years, which is a relatively short period in astronomical terms.
