Thank you to everyone who joined us for “Before America: Art, Faith, and the Making of San Antonio,” presented by Las Misiones in collaboration with Bexar County!
During the exhibition, we were honored to host two engaging presentations featuring Anna Nau, PhD, and the Hon. Rebecca Simmons. These presentations explored the rich history, architecture, and enduring legacy of the San Antonio Missions.
A special thank you to the Padre Margil Center and its dedicated team for helping us bring this exhibition to the community.
While the exhibition has come to a close, our mission to preserve and share the history, faith, and cultural heritage of these sacred places continues.

Happy Feast of St. Francis of Assisi!
The Franciscan presence in San Antonio dates back to the founding of our historic Missions and continues today.

St. Francis’ call to care for God’s creation and live with humility and simplicity can still be felt in these sacred places. Generations of Franciscans, including Venerable Antonio Margil de Jesús, have walked these Missions and helped shape their enduring legacy of faith.

As we care for and preserve these historic mission churches, we honor the Franciscan spirit that has guided them for centuries.

October 4 is the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, a day when many parishes celebrate the Blessing of the Animals in honor of his love and care for all of God’s creation.

Our Missions welcome many visitors, including our four-legged friends! Last week, Loki, visiting from Houston, stopped by Mission Concepción to enjoy the beautiful mission grounds. 🐶

If you’re planning a visit with your pet, please keep them leashed while on the mission grounds and come ready to enjoy the history, beauty, and peaceful surroundings of our mission churches.

Join us October 10 for a special presentation: “The Hidden Story of the American Revolution.”

Discover a lesser-known chapter of our history as we explore the involvement of San Antonio’s mission churches in the War for Independence and their connection to the American Revolution.

The presentation will be led by Las Misiones Executive Director, Hon. Rebecca Simmons.

For this special event, we’re extending our gallery for one additional day, giving you another opportunity to experience Before America: Art, Faith, and the Making of San Antonio.

Join us this Saturday for the annual Double Solar Illumination, open to the public in celebration of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary starting at 6:00pm!

This special moment of light at the Missions offers a unique opportunity to experience the architecture, history, and celestial phenomenon that come together on this day.

We’ll also welcome Rex Hausman for a special presentation on the light catchers, inspired by the historic light-filled architecture of the Abbey of Saint-Denis (1144) and the ways light has been used to shape sacred spaces throughout history.

Today marks the 300th anniversary of the death of Fr. Antonio Margil de Jesús (1657–1726), one of the most influential figures in the early history of Spanish Texas.

Fr. Margil was known for his remarkable journeys on foot, traveling from Querétaro, Mexico, to San Antonio and across what is now Texas. In 1716, he helped establish early missionary efforts in the Nacogdoches region, contributing to the first Spanish settlements in East Texas. Four years later, in 1720, he founded Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo in San Antonio, a mission that would become one of the most significant cultural and architectural landmarks in the region.

Fr. Margil died on August 6, 1726, in Mexico City. Three centuries later, his legacy lives on through the missions, communities, and shared heritage that continue to shape Texas history.

As we commemorate the 300th anniversary of his passing, we reflect on the enduring impact of his travels, leadership, and the historic mission sites that remain an important part of our cultural landscape.
