Join us this Saturday for the annual Double Solar Illumination, open to the public in celebration of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary starting at 6:00pm!

This special moment of light at the Missions offers a unique opportunity to experience the architecture, history, and celestial phenomenon that come together on this day.

We’ll also welcome Rex Hausman for a special presentation on the light catchers, inspired by the historic light-filled architecture of the Abbey of Saint-Denis (1144) and the ways light has been used to shape sacred spaces throughout history.

Today marks the 300th anniversary of the death of Fr. Antonio Margil de Jesús (1657–1726), one of the most influential figures in the early history of Spanish Texas.

Fr. Margil was known for his remarkable journeys on foot, traveling from Querétaro, Mexico, to San Antonio and across what is now Texas. In 1716, he helped establish early missionary efforts in the Nacogdoches region, contributing to the first Spanish settlements in East Texas. Four years later, in 1720, he founded Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo in San Antonio, a mission that would become one of the most significant cultural and architectural landmarks in the region.

Fr. Margil died on August 6, 1726, in Mexico City. Three centuries later, his legacy lives on through the missions, communities, and shared heritage that continue to shape Texas history.

As we commemorate the 300th anniversary of his passing, we reflect on the enduring impact of his travels, leadership, and the historic mission sites that remain an important part of our cultural landscape.

🔔 For generations, the bells of Mission San José have echoed across the community, marking moments of prayer, celebration, and daily life.

Long before modern communication, church bells served as the voice of the community. They called people to Mass, celebrated weddings and feast days, mourned the loss of loved ones, and marked the passing of time. Their sound reminded communities that faith was woven into the rhythm of everyday life.

Today, the bells of Mission San José continue this centuries-old tradition, ringing at noon as a reminder that these historic sites are more than landmarks—they are living mission churches where faith, history, and community continue to thrive.

This Independence Day, we celebrate our nation's history while honoring the places where so much of our story began.

Long before 1776, the San Antonio Missions were communities of faith, culture, and resilience that helped shape our region and continue to inspire generations today.

As we commemorate America's 250th anniversary, Las Misiones remains committed to preserving these sacred places for generations to come.

Before San Antonio had a symbol, it had the Rose Window.

Carved into the limestone walls of Mission San José in 1775, the iconic Rose Window became one of the most recognizable designs in San Antonio history — inspiring the city’s visual identity for generations to come. The quatrefoil shape seen throughout San Antonio today traces back to this very window, created inside the “Queen of the Missions.”

Legend says master sculptor Pedro Huizar designed the Rose Window as a tribute to his beloved wife after her passing.

More than 250 years later, the design still lives on throughout San Antonio, in art, architecture, culture, and the spirit of the city itself.

The San Antonio Missions aren’t just historic landmarks. They are the foundation of San Antonio’s identity.
