THIS POOR JACKED UP CAT 💔

About six weeks ago, Eames started peeing outside the litterbox. Not straining, not tiny pees — full bladder, full urination. So I was pretty confident this wasn’t a UTI or cystitis… Eames was trying to tell me something.

We ran all the things:
✔️ X-rays — no stones
✔️ Ultrasound — no crystals, normal bladder lining
✔️ Urine culture — pending (just to be thorough)
✔️ Round of antibiotics — no improvement

But Eames was showing signs of lower back pain… so we dug deeper.

Today’s X-rays showed:👉 No spinal injury or arthritis👉 BUT very shallow hip joints

Which means… congenital junk hips 😞

This has caused knock-knees and forced him to compensate in ways that put strain on other joints (those of us who are hypermobile get it!). The result: chronic hip and knee pain.

So now, we treat the pain.

Eames received a Solensia injection today — a monthly medication commonly used for arthritis in cats. We’re hopeful this will make a BIG difference for him 🤞

He’ll also need:
• Low-entry litterboxes
• A home with fewer obstacles/jumping requirements

We are still waiting on the urine culture to fully rule out a UTI, but right now all signs point to pain being the cause.

💸 Last week + today’s vet visits = about $1,000

This tiny boy is… not cheap 😅

QUESTIONS ABOUT FIP?

I wanted to provide some more info about Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP). Most people have never heard of FIP. Many vets still believe it to be a death sentence.

In the last two years, STPR has successfully treated 3 cats who had FIP. It is a lengthy process (almost 6 months in total) and not inexpensive - but so totally worth it!!

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) — What Every Cat Owner, Adopter, and Foster Should Know 🐾

FIP is a serious condition that develops from feline coronavirus (FCoV), a virus that most cats have been exposed to—especially in multi-cat environments.

In most cats, this virus causes little to no illness.

In rare cases, however, the virus mutates inside the cat’s body, leading to FIP.

⚠️ Cats at higher risk include:
• Kittens and young cats
• Senior cats
• Cats with weakened or compromised immune systems

Key facts:
• Feline coronavirus is species-specific — it cannot infect humans, dogs, or other animals (so no need to isolate FIP kitties)
• FIP is NOT contagious between cats
• The mutation happens within an individual cat—it is not something that spreads

There is also good news: FIP is no longer always fatal. Treatment options now exist, and early diagnosis can be life-saving.

💡 You know your cats best. Please watch for:
• Decreased energy or not “bouncing back”
• Reduced appetite or weight loss
• Ongoing or unexplained fever
• A swollen abdomen (fluid buildup)
• Eye changes or neurologic signs (unsteady walking, behavior changes)

If something doesn’t seem right, don’t wait—reach out to your veterinarian. Early action matters.

You can also reach out to the FIP Warriors page for questions, support, or treatment guidance.

I hope this answers some of the questions you may have. If you have more, please ask away!!! 😁

SO IT'S NOT GREAT NEWS...

It's a really good thing that Isla (7 month old Highlander kitten that came from a breeding situation) has started to interact & trust me a bit more.

Because I was quickly able to realize that *something* was not quite right

Issue was eating really well - but not putting on weight. Her hip bones & spine had started being readily visible. Isla was comfortable with the other cats; cuddling up with them - but she still was not playing or acting like a kitten.

So I took her into the vet for bloodwork. Because my paranoid suspicion was Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP).

There is no specific test for FIP. The diagnosis is made based on symptoms (low grade fever, lethargy, muscle wasting - especially along the spine, often a lack of appetite) & certain blood values (anemia is common, also abnormal total protein/globulin/albumin among others). So a best guess diagnosis.

Well...I was right. Thankfully I do have some of the FIP treatment meds on hand - enough for a week. Which allow us time to get an order placed/mailed/received.

I started Isla on the meds Thursday night. And just in two days the difference is night & day!!!

The medication is not inexpensive. And must be given for a minimum of 88 days. Please help us help Isla!!

ADOPTED!!!

Prince (white British Shorthair) came to us from Kuwait back in November. He's been here so long for no particular reason - it's just difficult for us to adopt out white cats. 🤷‍♀️

But Prince finally went to his forever home today!! Good life little boy!!!
