BIG NEWS FROM SAN ANTONIO MISSION INDIAN DESCENDANTS

Today, we are honored to announce the launch of something years in the making, our new Legacy Project:

Find Your Roots, Claim Your Story

We are officially launching a historic initiative dedicated to helping individuals and families who believe they may be descendants of one of the five San Antonio Missions reconnect with their ancestral stories.

For generations, many of us grew up knowing little to nothing about our Indigenous roots. Family stories were lost, identities changed, records scattered, and histories left untold. Yet our ancestors endured.

Through genealogy research, historical records, education, and community collaboration, this initiative will help descendants uncover family connections and preserve stories that deserve to be remembered.

While June marks the official soft launch and introduction of the Legacy Project, active research efforts and descendant discovery work will begin in Fall 2026, creating opportunities for participants to engage in genealogy, historical research, and educational programming as the project develops.

This is not simply about discovering names on a family tree.
This is about honoring those who came before us.

This is about reconnecting families to a history that lives beyond the Mission walls.

This is about ensuring future generations know that our ancestors were not lost to history—they helped shape San Antonio, Texas, and continue to live through us.

We are proud to launch this effort alongside an extraordinary collaboration of institutions committed to education, research, and preserving community stories:

Our Lady of the Lake University
Texas A&M University–San Antonio
The University of Texas at San Antonio
St. Mary's University
Trinity University
Texas State University
The Doseum

Together, we are creating space for descendants to reclaim, preserve, and celebrate their stories.

If you have ever wondered whether your family may have ties to one of the San Antonio Missions, this project is for you.

Join us as we begin this historic journey.

We were truly honored to meet, and spend time with Tiernan Sittenfeld, the NPCA’s new CEO, her staff and of course, we always enjoy spending time with our friends Cary Dupuy, NPCA Regional Director, and Cristobal Lopez, NPCA Texas Program Manager.

Moments like these remind us why we do this work. Diana Moreno Reyes and I are always grateful for the opportunity to share the stories of our ancestors with those who visit the missions, keeping their voices, sacrifices, and legacy alive.

Their strength and resilience made our present possible, and that is something we should never forget.

Today, take a moment to learn something new about your own ancestors. When we speak their names and share their stories, we honor them, and ensure they live on through us.
