Paityn Jewell Stewart had the opportunity to revisit Timberwood Park Elementary School, this time as a special guest reader!

A member of the Alamo Mission Chapter, Children of the Republic of Texas (CRT), Paityn read one of the Education Committee children’s books to a first-grade class at her former school.

By sharing stories about Texas, Paityn helped introduce young students to the people, places, and events that shaped our state.

We’re proud to see our young members sharing their time and enthusiasm for Texas history with the next generation!

Members of the Alamo Mission Chapter boarded a charter bus for a day of history, discovery, and fellowship in Austin!

From the Texas State Cemetery and DRT Headquarters to the Republic of Texas Museum, we explored the stories and people that shaped Texas. The day also included lunch from the beloved Juan in a Million, a tour of the historic French Legation, and a visit to Laguna Gloria, Clara Driscoll’s former lakeside estate.

It was a wonderful day of learning, exploring, and enjoying time together as Daughters while discovering new connections to Texas history.

Gonzales Day | October 2

On October 2, 1835, the Battle of Gonzales marked the beginning of the armed struggle of the Texas Revolution. When Mexican authorities demanded the return of a small cannon provided to the settlers of Gonzales, the settlers refused. The resulting confrontation ended with the Mexican troops withdrawing toward Bexar.

Today, we remember the men who stood at Gonzales and the events that set Texas on the path toward independence.

Texian Navy Day | Third Saturday in September

Each year on the third Saturday in September, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas honors the sailors, privateers, and naval leaders whose service helped secure Texas independence.

In September 1835, near Velasco, the Texian privateer San Felipe engaged the Mexican war schooner Correo. The Mexican vessel surrendered, marking the first naval victory of the Texas Revolution—one month before the first major land battle at Gonzales.

Throughout the Revolution, Texian naval forces protected the Texas coast, escorted vital supplies, disrupted Mexican shipping, and challenged Mexican control of the Gulf of Mexico. Their service reminds us that the fight for Texas independence was won not only on land, but also at sea.

Today, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of the sailors and privateers whose service helped shape the future of Texas.

Texas Heroes Day | September 18

Each year on September 18, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas honors the soldiers of the Republic of Texas while also paying tribute to the military men and women who continue to serve our nation.

Texas Heroes Day commemorates those remembered through the Dawson Massacre, the Mier Expedition, and the imprisonment of Texian volunteers at Perote Prison. Their courage, sacrifice, and perseverance became enduring symbols of devotion to Texas.

Today, we honor all who served in defense of Texas and remember those whose sacrifices continue to inspire future generations.

The Alamo Mission Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas was honored to attend the opening reception for Sons of ’76: The Alamo in the Age of Revolutions, a new exhibit at the Alamo’s Ralston Family Collections Center.

Opening September 4, 2026, the exhibit explores the connections between the American Revolution, the Texas Revolution, and the role the Alamo played in the continuing story of American independence and expansion. Created in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and the Alamo’s 190th anniversary, Sons of ’76 brings these intertwined stories together in a compelling new way.

We are especially proud that this exhibit is one of the first recipients of the Alamo Mission Chapter’s Amanda Fenley Webb and James E. Webb, Jr. Memorial Grant. Established to support projects that preserve and educate about Texas history through education, preservation, art, and research, the Webb Memorial Grant reflects our Chapter’s long-standing commitment to ensuring these stories continue to be shared with future generations.

It was a privilege to celebrate the opening alongside those who brought this exhibit to life—and to see the Webb family’s legacy of supporting education and preservation continue through this meaningful project.

Battle of Nacogdoches | August 2, 1832

On August 2, 1832, citizens of Nacogdoches and volunteers from neighboring East Texas settlements answered the call to defend their community after Colonel José de las Piedras ordered the surrender of their arms. Following the fighting, Mexican forces withdrew and surrendered the next day.

The victory ended the Mexican military presence in East Texas, allowing citizens to meet and organize without military intervention in the years leading to the Texas Revolution.

Today, we honor all 253 known participants in the Battle of Nacogdoches. Although history has preserved the names of only 80, each played a role in the story of Texas.
