NEISD Board Briefs | June 08 Meeting

I want to share a brief update on several items the North East ISD Board of Trustees discussed and took action on during Monday night’s regular board meeting. As always, transparency and partnership remain critical to our mission. I hope this update helps us foster that engagement.

School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) Annual Report
The Board of Trustees was given the annual report of the SHAC.
The SHAC recommends:
• The Board consider the approved SHAC bylaw Revision regarding attendance.
• The expansion of the Juvenile Justice Jeopardy Community Initiative, designed to improve interactions between students and law enforcement, at all high school and middle schools.

Student Code of Conduct
The Board of Trustees approved changes to the Student Code of Conduct to include going “bell-to-bell” for our District’s “cellphone policy” to be in compliance with state regulations and updated board policy.

Driscoll Middle School Name Change
The Board of Trustees voted to approve the renaming of Driscoll Middle School to the Driscoll Learning Center. Last year, the board voted to consolidate Driscoll. The facility will now be used for ACE, NETS, School-Aged Parenting, Pre-School Assessment Center and the Alamo Area Council of Governments.

Naming Road at Johnson High School
There is private road on the Johnson High School property that connects Bulverde Road and TPC Parkway. The Board approved the naming of that road to Johnson Way Access Road.

Personnel Updates
• Christie Szabo is the new principal of Roosevelt High School.
• Judy Morales is the new principal of Longs Creek Elementary School.

Recognitions & Good News
Two Academy of Creative Education (ACE) High School students led the North East ISD Board of Trustees in the invocation and pledges to the U.S. and Texas flags.

Adrianna Shyyan led the board and guests in the invocation and Yasna Betsabe Vallejos Godoyled the pledges.

The Rattler Guard from Reagan High School are back-to-back National Champions. For the second year in a row, they were named the All-Army Armed Drill National Champions.

UPDATE: TEA Cellphone Policy Conference

Dear NEISD Community,

I want to share an important update with you, following our recent conference with the Texas Education Agency.

The TEA will not appoint a conservator for our District.

In April, the TEA recommended the appointment of a conservator to our District because the agency believed our cellphone policy did not align with state law and the guidance they provided.

During a special board meeting on April 27, prior to our TEA hearing, our Board of Trustees voted to revise our policy to implement a bell-to-bell cellphone ban starting in the 2026-2027 school year.

In response to that action, the TEA rescinded its recommendation of a conservator appointment and now considers this matter resolved.

I appreciate the engagement and thoughtful conversations we have had throughout this process. Decisions that impact our students and schools are important, and we remain committed to listening to our community, families, students, and staff as we move forward.

As we begin planning for the implementation of the new cellphone policy next school year, we will continue to communicate clearly about expectations and next steps to make sure students and families are in compliance, informed and supported.

Together, we can make a difference.
