🔥 DTL Monitoring Forest Fire in Noord-Limburg, Netherlands

Disaster Tech Lab is closely monitoring the large forest fire currently burning in the Noord-Limburg region near Venray/Oostrum, Netherlands. The fire has already scorched roughly 100 hectares of woodland and remains only partially contained as crews battle flames spreading treetop to treetop.

What makes this one hit close to home: the fire is burning less than an hour's drive from our European office in Sittard-Geleen.

We're in ongoing contact with the responding agencies and stand ready to assist — with connectivity, equipment, or coordination support — whenever and however we're needed.

Our thoughts are with the firefighters, emergency crews, and communities in the affected area. 🧡

Last Saturday, August 1st, Disaster Tech Lab partnered with Pastor Jaime Cabralez of Jesus Christ Revealed Ministries and Pamela Allen of Eagles Flight Advocacy to bring critical aid to Uvalde. 🤝

We set up free public WiFi and delivered a shipment of essential supplies including:

✅ Work boots (various sizes, all genders)
✅ 5-gallon buckets & disaster cleaning kits
✅ Solar-powered lanterns and phone chargers
✅ Chainsaws, rakes, and shovels
✅ Dehumidifiers, tarps, and garbage bags
✅ Bleach, disinfectant wipes, and first aid kits
✅ Bottled water and more

🚨 SITREP: West Virginia Flash Flooding & Tornadoes — July 31, 2026

Ten days into recovery, Upshur County has reached a real milestone: officials have formally transitioned from emergency response into long-term recovery.

📍 Death toll holds at 2 (Judy A. Young, 59, and James J. Harper, 61, both Upshur County)
🚧 Debris removal accelerating — ~6,000 tons removed so far, though officials expect the final total to exceed 20,000 tons
🏗️ Governor Morrisey is directly calling for construction volunteers as recovery shifts toward rebuilding
🙋 The most pressing need right now is volunteers to help distribute supplies, not more donated goods — many weekend volunteers have returned to work
📜 Federal Major Disaster Declaration remains pending — this is what's holding up individual and local government assistance. FEMA is already on the ground conducting damage assessments alongside WVEMD and the SBA
💡 Two funding streams matter here: the state's Flood Resiliency Office got $5M in operational funding this year, but the separate Flood Resiliency Trust Fund (meant for actual mitigation projects) remains completely unfunded
🩹 Free tetanus/hepatitis A vaccines available TODAY (last day) at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, Weston, 9am–7pm

New resources found this week: a second major distribution hub at Market Place Mall in Weston, USDA Farm Service Agency support for affected farmers, and National Heritage Responders for damaged cultural collections.

🚨 SITREP UPDATE: Texas Hill Country Flooding — July 31, 2026

A significant correction and several new developments to share today:

📜 Federal declaration correction: The federal Emergency Declaration actually covers 33 counties, not the 28 previously reported. More importantly, we've now confirmed there are two separate FEMA stages — the Emergency Declaration (already approved) and a broader Major Disaster Declaration that Gov. Abbott formally requested, which remains pending. This explains why FEMA still hasn't begun assisting individuals or local governments, even weeks in.

⚠️ A body was recovered from the Nueces River near FM 481 on July 25. This has NOT been confirmed as flood-related and is not included in our death toll of 3 — the Uvalde County Sheriff's Office investigation is ongoing.

🚧 Uvalde County's countywide debris removal plan has been delayed — commissioners are waiting on state approval for a designated disposal site to protect the county's FEMA reimbursement eligibility.

💰 Kerrville's first specific damage figure: $30 million in infrastructure damage (water treatment plant, sewage lift stations, roads & bridges), per Mayor Joe Herring.

🤝 Nonprofit response update: Samaritan's Purse has completed 16 work orders in Kerrville with 161 still pending. Good360 — which gave $4.3M in goods after the 2025 flood — has received zero corporate support so far this year.

🚨 SITREP: West Virginia Flash Flooding & Tornadoes — July 30, 2026

Recovery continues into its second week, with real progress and some important open items to flag:

📍 Death toll holds at 2 (Judy A. Young, 59, and James J. Harper, 61, both Upshur County). Good news: Billy Heater, previously reported missing, was confirmed found safe by Sheriff Mike Coffman on July 27 — all initially unaccounted-for Upshur County residents have now been verified.

⚠️ Federal disaster declaration still NOT approved, more than a week after the flooding — WV's congressional delegation continues pressing the White House. The statewide state of emergency (issued July 21) is set to expire August 20 unless renewed.

🚧 Debris removal accelerating — ~6,000 tons removed from Lewis & Upshur counties so far, but officials expect the final total to be "well over 20,000 tons" once complete. Recovery is shifting toward rebuilding, with Gov. Morrisey directly calling for construction volunteers.

🌪️ NWS confirms 5 tornadoes touched down in WV as part of the same storm system (3 EF-2, 1 EF-1, 1 EF-0), plus Eastern Panhandle tracks.

📜 New scrutiny: reporting from the Washington Post and WV outlets highlights that the state's Flood Resiliency Trust Fund — created in 2023 specifically to fund flood mitigation — has never received a dollar of funding.

🚨 SITREP UPDATE: Texas Hill Country Flooding — July 30, 2026

Recovery continues across the Hill Country, with real infrastructure progress to report:

🌉 FM 481 bridge (Uvalde County): TxDOT has moved from "repair design ready" to an emergency repair contract now confirmed underway — the first concrete step toward reopening since the bridge collapsed over two weeks ago. No firm reopening date yet, but for comparison, a similar TxDOT emergency-contract bridge replacement elsewhere in Texas was completed nearly a month ahead of its target timeline.

📊 New data from RebuildKerr's public needs-assessment dashboard shows 90 businesses affected in Kerr County — though local officials believe the real number is likely higher, based on street-level surveys still being reconciled with state figures.

📜 Federal (28 counties) and state (59 counties) disaster declarations remain active
