Dear Neighborhood Association Leaders,
Last month's windstorm showed what you already know: when the power goes out, neighbors check on neighbors first. On streets, in apartment complexes, and across whole neighborhoods, help reach people sooner where neighbors already knew where to find accurate information and had the trust and relationships to know who might need a ride or a medication kept cold. Neighborhood Associations hold exactly that kind of knowledge and those relationships.
Climate Ready Neighborhoods (CRN) is a program of The Impact Guild, our San Antonio nonprofit, in partnership with the City of San Antonio's Department of Resilience and Sustainability. Together, we support a growing city wide network of Neighborhood PODs - community hubs where neighbors can share resources, and organize before, during, and after severe weather. In some neighborhoods these are physical spaces, and in some they are communication networks block-by-block.
We'd love for your Neighborhood Association to join this network. Over the course of the year, we help your neighborhood begin to develop your own Resilience Plan across six areas: Power, Connectivity, Operations, Accessibility & Transportation, Programs & Services, and Buildings & Landscape. Your neighborhood sets the priorities, and the network connects you to other neighborhoods doing the same work and to city-wide partners like CPS Energy, SAWS, and the Office of Emergency Management.
Come see what this looks like in practice at our next network meeting:
Resilient Power Workshop
Wednesday, October 15 · 6–8 pm
San Antonio Mennonite Church: 1443 S. St.Mary’s St, San Antonio, Tx 78210
We'll work through power-outage scenarios together using SHIFT Happens, an interactive activity that helps neighbors plan how they'd respond to different climate hazards. No prior involvement is needed, and you're welcome to bring a neighbor or board member. Details to share + RSVP
Can't make October? Save the date for our December network meeting on Dec 10 9-11am, focused on Resilient Accessibility & Transportation.
Active PODs also have access to micro-grants for community-led projects and a shared tool library with items such as NOAA Hand-cranked radios, emergency radios and tents, hydration stations and more for community-events.
If neither date works, reply to this email and we'll find a time to talk about what's already working in your neighborhood.
Kind Regards,
Bel Dodd
