CHAPS - Equine Assisted Therapy and Activities Program

CHAPS - Equine Assisted Therapy and Activities Program CHAPS - Children and Horses Always Produce Success an equine assisted therapy and activities program. CHAPS has been in existence since 2011.

CHAPS is supported by the Equine Advisory Council of the non-profit organization Partners for Youth (a 501(c)(3)), by the Bexar County Juvenile Board and is managed by the Bexar County Juvenile Probation Department. Currently CHAPS offers five programs to children.
- Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and/or Equine Assisted Learning provides children the opportunity to interact with horses and peers

to problem solve, improve communication as well as reflect on their own behaviors and emotions that emerge during various experiential exercises.

- Intro to Horses class offers children an opportunity to be around and interact with horses to assuage fears but also asses a child's interest in participating in additional classes.

-Children who participate in the Horse Care Program learn horse psychology and behavior with an emphasis on trust and relationship building. Children also learn all aspects of caring for and grooming the horse assigned to them with the intent of fostering empathy and understanding of others.

- Horsemanship continues to focus on trust and relationship building between the children and horses and offers the opportunity to learn basic horse riding skills. The intent is to teach children about non-verbal communication, body language, emotional self regulation as well as foster a healthy sense of self-esteem and confidence.

- Horse Camp incorporates aspect of each of the aforementioned classes and is offered primarily during school Holidays. The CHAPS program places a high value on relationship building, learning, emotional growth, self discovery, building confidence and enhancing self-esteem as well as developing a sense of responsibility. CHAPS also places high value on creating a safe, healthy, peaceful and healing environment for both horses and children. There is healing power in horses. There is healing power in being outdoors. We feel CHAPS offers opportunities for children to commune with both - a refuge for often troubled and turbulent lives. The three children and horse below are participating in an activity called "the brain". 🧠

This activity requires the children to link together with one child being "the brain" in the middle that operates the left and right "arms".πŸ’ͺ

Only the brain is allowed to talk while the team brushes, halters, and saddles the horse. This activity never has the same outcome, but the results are always interesting!

Speaking of horses, CHAPS is actively seeking a horse donation (or two) for our myriad of programs. If you have a horse in mind for us please see the flyer below. 🐎🐎

Introducing children to horses is not just our job, it's our passion.

Another successful class in the books! These children will now move on to the next class where they will learn to care for, and eventually ride, their new equine partners.

Gearing up for some cold, wet, and potentially icy conditions here at CHAPS. πŸ₯Ά

The boys were unimpressed with our picture taking shenanigans, and Zane refused to participate. 🀣

That's ok, Zane. This weather makes us cranky, too! 😠

It's a beautiful day to ride!

This is what we love to do! Teach children the joy (and sometimes struggles) of riding. From grooming and lunging to steering and backing, these kids learn what horsemanship is.
