June 14, 2025 โ Day 3: Cultural Immersion in Bukidnon
After an exciting second day filled with tribal dances, cultural exchanges, and unforgettable experiences, the team woke up to the breathtaking scenery of the beautiful Finca de Garces Coffee Farm in Pangantucan, Bukidnon.
The morning began with a hearty breakfast accompanied by freshly brewed Finca de Garces coffee, a proudly local product grown and produced right on the farm. More than simply enjoying a cup of coffee, the team was treated to an educational coffee experience by hosts Maynard and Melissa Garces, who shared the art and science behind coffee preparation. The team learned about various brewing methods and gained a deeper appreciation for the journey of coffee from bean to cup.
Nestled in the fertile highlands of Bukidnon, Finca de Garces is known for producing high-quality Arabica coffee. The farm promotes sustainable farming practices while supporting local livelihoods and showcasing the growing coffee industry of Bukidnon. Following breakfast, the team toured the coffee farm and learned firsthand about the entire coffee production process, from planting and nurturing seedlings to harvesting, drying, roasting, and packaging.
The cultural adventure continued as the team traveled to the scenic Lake Napalit, one of Pangantucan's hidden gems. Often referred to as the "Little Switzerland of Bukidnon," Lake Napalit sits approximately 3,000 feet above sea level and is surrounded by lush forests and rolling mountains. The serene lake is deeply connected to the culture and traditions of the indigenous Manobo and Talaandig tribes who call the area home.
Upon arrival, the team was warmly welcomed with traditional tribal dances and cultural presentations. A delicious lunch, generously sponsored by Mayor Manolito Garces and his family, was served overlooking the picturesque lake. Team members enjoyed riding the famous floating bamboo hut, taking in the fresh mountain air, and even cooling off with a refreshing swim in the waters.
From Pangantucan, the team proceeded to the Municipality of Maramag, known as the "Gateway to Southern Bukidnon" and home to some of the province's major agricultural and industrial developments. Maramag plays a significant role in Bukidnon's economy, particularly in agriculture, livestock, and sugar production, while also serving as a strategic hub connecting neighboring municipalities.
The team received another warm Bukidnon welcome from Maramag Mayor Jose Joel P. Doromal and Tourism Officer Teresa Barillea, who hosted a wonderful dinner in honor of the visiting delegation. The Municipality of Maramag also generously sponsored the team's hotel accommodations, ensuring everyone was comfortable and well-rested before the medical mission activities ahead.
Day 3 was a beautiful reminder that hospitality is one of the greatest treasures of Bukidnon. From coffee farms and mountain lakes to cultural performances and heartfelt fellowship, the day showcased the richness of Bukidnon's people, traditions, and natural wonders.
On behalf of SAFACC and the University of the Incarnate Word, we extend our deepest gratitude to Mayor Manolito Garces and family, Mayor Jose Joel P. Doromal, Tourism Officer Teresa Barillea, Tourism Officer Lea Apal, Tourism Officer Jhel Sevilla, and all the local leaders, staff, and community members who welcomed our team with such extraordinary kindness and generosity. Your hospitality transformed our cultural immersion into an experience we will cherish for a lifetime.
Together, we continue building bridges of friendship, cultural understanding, and service between communities.
