We love when alumni get together to not only have a great time but also support students in San Antonio ISD!

Burbank High School, SAISD alumni gathered tonight to honor Dr. David De La Garza and Yvonne "Bonnie" Garcia while raising funds for the Burbank Hispanic Scholarship. This $1,500 scholarship continues each year thanks to the support of these dedicated alumni and friends to assist Burbank High School graduates of Hispanic descent. If you missed tonight's dinner and would like to show your support, please visit https://www.saisdfoundation.com/donate/ and indicate the scholarship name in the comments.

Tonight's bonus: delicious dinner prepared by Burbank culinary students!

Daniel Diaz, an alum from Edison High School, SAISD, joined 23 other alumni as we inaugurated our first class of the SAISD Alumni Professional Network in February. After high school, Daniel attended St. Mary’s University and during this time, he interned with Walter and Cesar Serna at their law firm, Serna & Serna. This exposure within a professional network is what Daniel credits with making him who he is today. His experiences have turned into an amazing career with USAA. Daniel feels that giving back is wildly important and contributes to the SAISD Foundation through USAA’s employee matching gifts program, doubling his monthly donation. Thank you, Daniel, for being part of the SAISD Alumni Professional Network and for supporting teachers and students in SAISD.

Today is and we are honoring women like Joan Fischer Comer and D’Vaughn Duran.

The Joan Fischer Comer Memorial Scholarship was established by Robert and Judy Comer to provide an educational opportunity to an outstanding young woman athlete, in memory of his mom, Joan Fischer Comer. Joan was a track star at Jefferson High School who loved distance running and the hurdles. Civic-minded, she and her older sister volunteered their time at the local USO center, and in Joan’s senior year, she finished high school midyear and was allowed to graduate in December. D’Vaughn (Jefferson, ‘21) was awarded the $2,500 scholarship and is attending St. Mary’s University.

Thank you to donors like the Comers for supporting young women like D’Vaughn in San Antonio ISD.

We are super proud of the talent in the Sam Houston High School, SAISD construction program! Students have built 5 fabulous dog houses that we are auctioning off to support the growing program. The funds from the sale of these dog houses will be used to purchase building materials to give students hands-on experience in residential home construction. Libraries are the largest classrooms in a school. To continue our "Thank a Teacher" series we want to send some love out to Jennifer De Waelsche at Burbank High School, SAISD and all of the other hard-working librarians in San Antonio ISD. The SAISD Foundation has a front-row seat to many of the amazing projects Ms. De Waelsche has put into her library. Her efforts to make it a welcoming space where students can read, learn and engage in activities are constant. From writing a grant for flexible seating to creating a socially distanced environment for groups to meet. We are excited to visit her later this spring to see what her MA.G.I.C (Making Art, Gaming, Imagination and Crafting) Club are sewing up this semester. Secretly, we just want to hang out and be a part of what used to be known as the Harry Potter Club ;)

On February 15, we inducted 24 alumni into our brand new Alumni Professional Network, a group of alumni across a variety of industries who are interested in reconnecting with San Antonio ISD. These committed alumni will help students and our newest alumni gain exposure to the wide range of careers in San Antonio and the surrounding area by providing networking, connections and exposure through job shadowing, internships, and work-based field trips, or by becoming career speakers.

Thank you to SAISD Interim Superintendent Dr. “J”, SAISD Foundation Board Chair and Jefferson alum, Ernest Bromley, SAISD Board Director and Burbank alum, Robert Olivares, Brackenridge alumn Denise Ojeda and SAISD Foundation Executive Director Judy Geelhoed for energizing our group and kicking off our inaugural year together.

Each week, we will spotlight members of the Alumni Professional Network and share their stories There are many ways alumni, friends of San Antonio ISD, and community members can make a significant and very positive impact by volunteering. Times are tough, and the tough keep going. Thank you to all of the teachers that show up each day to give their best to our students. You make bright futures possible. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We have a special shout out to those teachers in San Antonio ISD that built their foundations in the district like Juan Morales, Lanier class of 1993. Juan has received multiple innovative grants from the SAISD Foundation the latest, using drones to incorporate math and geometry in wheel alignment, was just featured in our newsletter.

We are kicking off 2022 with 7 new scholarships and today we are highlighting the Gerald F. Doebbler Award for Chemistry which is awarded annually to a graduating senior from Brackenridge High School, SAISD who is pursuing further studies in chemistry. Professor Gerald (Jerry) F. Doebbler graduated at the top of his 1949 Brackenridge High School class and it was where he came to love chemistry. He instilled an interest in chemistry in others by hosting monthly science experiments for the school’s Science Club. This award, given in Jerry’s memory and honor, recognizes a student’s achievements in chemistry and offers encouragement to a Brackenridge High School graduate to pursue further study in the field of chemistry.
