Alamo Area Search & Rescue AASAR is an all volunteer SAR team based in the San Antonio TX area. Our K9s are nationally certified in trailing, air scent, and human remains detection.

We deploy at the request of government agencies to help locate missing persons. Alamo Area Search and Rescue (AASAR) is a non-profit, all volunteer search and rescue team based in the San Antonio, Texas area. Our volunteers provide search and rescue resources to public safety agencies in Texas free of charge. Our team currently consists of Wilderness Search Specialists and Search and Rescue Canines.

Are you interested in joining a search and rescue team and making a difference in the community? Alamo Area Search and Rescue (AASAR) is expanding our team and is currently seeking dedicated volunteers, specifically flankers, and K9 handlers.

We will be hosting an open house on September 19, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (location to be determined). This event will provide an opportunity for those interested to learn more about our vital mission, training requirements, and volunteer roles.

Today, we traded the oppressive heat and humidity of our usual training sites for an air-conditioned classroom—but the mission remained the same: stay prepared and mission ready.

Our Medical Liaison, Karen Prendergast, RN, presented Stop the Bleed, followed by
, who certified our team in BLS CPR.

Board members Cassie Gemes, Jennifer Holguin, and Karen Carr also led sessions covering first responder wellness, deployment procedures, lost person behavior, and Alzheimer’s wanderers.

It was a busy and productive day! These quarterly classroom sessions complement our weekly field training and help ensure our team is prepared to effectively search for missing persons—and provide aid when needed. Because when the call comes, there is no time to learn. We have to be ready.

Train. Prepare. Serve. Bring them home.

The stars at night are big and bright… ⭐️🌙

And that means it’s time for AASAR to train in the dark!

Recently, our team conducted an evening/night training exercise to sharpen our skills and enhance our operational capabilities when searches continue after the sun goes down. Because, unfortunately, missing-person calls don’t always happen conveniently between breakfast and bedtime! 😉

Night searches bring their own challenges. Headlamps and other lighting become essential, unfamiliar terrain looks VERY different in the dark, and handlers and flankers have to adjust how they navigate, communicate, and maintain situational awareness.

Our K9s? Well… they’re not nearly as impressed by the darkness. They simply put their noses to work and carry on like it’s business as usual. 🐾

For our human team members, however, it’s a different story. Rocks, roots, holes, fences—and the occasional “What exactly did I just step on?”—all become part of the adventure!

Training in these conditions helps ensure we are prepared whenever the call comes, day or night.

Because no matter what time the sun sets, the mission remains the same: Find them. Bring them home.

AASAR was honored to be invited to present recently to the Alamo Area Fire Chiefs Association and share information about our mission capabilities and how we support public safety agencies during missing-person incidents.

When someone goes missing, minutes matter. The rapid deployment of our certified air-scent K9 teams and trailing bloodhounds can provide valuable resources during those critical early hours and increase the potential for a positive outcome.

Strong partnerships between AASAR and our local fire, law enforcement, and emergency management agencies strengthen our community’s ability to respond when families need help most. By bringing together highly trained volunteers, specialized K9 teams, and dedicated public safety professionals, we are better prepared to serve our community when a loved one goes missing.

We are grateful for the opportunity to share our capabilities and, most importantly, to build relationships with the agencies we may one day be called upon to assist.

Early this morning, AASAR was requested by a local agency to assist in the search for a missing individual. Without hesitation, our certified volunteers gathered their equipment, loaded up their K9 partners, and answered the call.

It didn’t take long for K9 Storm to do what she does best. With unwavering focus, determination, and an incredible nose, Storm located the missing individual, bringing a successful resolution to the search. Storm approaches every deployment with purpose and heart, always eager to work and serve those in need. Today was another reminder of the extraordinary bond between handler and K9, and the countless hours of training that make moments like these possible.

We are incredibly proud of our team and especially of K9 Storm. Her dedication, strong drive, and unwavering commitment to our search efforts make all the difference. Great job, Storm. You truly are a very good girl. 🐾🐾

Our hearts are with everyone across the Hill Country as communities continue to face devastating flooding.

Please remain weather aware, closely monitor updates and alerts from your local emergency management officials and the National Weather Service, and do not delay evacuating if instructed to do so. A few extra minutes can make all the difference.

Never attempt to drive through flooded roadways or cross low water crossings. Turn Around, Don’t Drown. Floodwaters are often deeper and moving much faster than they appear.

Stay safe, look out for your neighbors, and keep the Hill Country in your thoughts during this difficult time.

K9 Valentine did her usual fantastic job finding a concealed human during training yesterday. Barking is her response when a subject is located and she is very vocal indeed when the job is done ❤️

Search dogs are incredibly intelligent—but just like people, they’re always looking for the easiest way to solve a problem!Sometimes during training, a K9 will simply follow their handler’s scent trail until it disappears…and then begin searching for the actual source. Clever? Absolutely. But not exactly what we’re trying to teach! So our drone operator, Jay, came up with a creative solution: use the drone to discreetly drop the training source in the search area. With no human scent trail leading to it, our K9s have to rely solely on their noses to locate the source. Problem solved! It’s another example of how we continuously adapt our training to challenge our dogs, strengthen their skills, and keep them ready for the real-world missions that matter most. Who knew staying one step ahead of a search dog could require a drone? 🐕🚁. It’s a fun reminder that our K9 partners are always thinking—and that good training means finding creative ways to keep them learning.
