As we enter the Memorial Day weekend, AASAR would like to honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country. This is more than a holiday weekend — it is a time to reflect on the courage, selflessness, and dedication of those who gave their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy every day. We remember the fallen heroes who answered the call without hesitation, and we extend our deepest gratitude to the families who carry their memory forward. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten. As we gather with family and friends this weekend, may we also take a moment to honor those who are no longer with us and recognize the true meaning of this somber day.

Some of our HRD teams recently attended a water recovery seminar hosted by London-Laurel Rescue Squad in Kentucky, and came away with a wealth of knowledge and valuable hands-on experience. During the seminar, our K9 teams trained on several different types of boats to help build confidence and adaptability while working from a variety of vessels. They also practiced search strategies for multiple types of water recovery scenarios and emergencies. Opportunities like this are invaluable in helping our teams continue to grow their skills and remain mission ready. We are incredibly grateful they were able to attend this outstanding training.

Today was K9 Starbuck’s retirement day. Starbuck, a certified Human Remains Detection canine, began her journey with Utah Search Dogs before joining AASAR in 2017. From the moment she became part of our team, she served with unwavering dedication, heart, and purpose. Over the years, she responded to countless deployments, assisting law enforcement agencies with crime scenes, cold cases, and missing persons searches. No matter the conditions or circumstances, Starbuck was always ready to work. She answered every call with determination and helped bring answers, peace, and closure to grieving families during some of the darkest moments of their lives. Her work mattered deeply, and the impact she made can never truly be measured. Behind every deployment was a loyal partner, a trusted teammate, and a dog who gave her all to the mission. Starbuck’s years of faithful service reflect not only her incredible abilities, but also the special bond she shared with her handler and teammates. Today, we celebrate an extraordinary career and honor a canine who has given so much to others. While Starbuck may be trading long searches and deployments for naps on a comfy couch, endless treats, and a well-earned slower pace of life, she will always remain a cherished member of the AASAR family. Thank you, Starbuck, for every mile traveled, every search completed, and every life you touched along the way. We wish you a retirement filled with comfort, love, and happiness. You have more than earned it.
