Join us Monday, November 14!

We are delighted to share that the Texas Historical Commission
has approved our proposal for the first historical marker focused on indigenous culture and heritage that will be installed in Bexar County.

The marker subject is "The Pajalate Language", the only surviving language of the many indigenous peoples who once lived in our area. The historical significance of Pajalate and the THC's 'Undertold' marker program are discussed in this recent article in the San Antonio Express-News by Elaine Ayala: https://bitly.com/

You are invited to participate in the process of bringing this marker to life!

On Monday, November 14, 6:30-7:30pm, we will meet at the Mission Branch Library, 3134 Roosevelt Avenue, to launch the public input phase of the project. The meeting will be jointly hosted with the Bexar County Historical Commission, which was established in 1967 to preserve, protect, and promote the rich history of Bexar County.

Thank you San Antonio Public Library!

Hello!

Late in 2020, a group of neighbors started meeting to celebrate the easing of the COVID pandemic and to share our gratitude for being here. "Here" for us is the neighborhood surrounding one of the last four remaining segments of the original waterway that is now called the San Antonio River, coming off Mission Reach, near Padre Park on the Southside of San Antonio.

This is a powerful place. Humans have inhabited this part of the world for over 13,000 years. We are just a few of the many hundreds and thousands of thousands that will continue to be drawn here, as long as our rivers run.

As we talked about what we love about this place, we also shared our concerns about the failing health of the Old River, which is choked with non-native invasive plant species and often filled with trash. We also wondered why there are no place names in this area that recognize our indigenous heritage, which lives today.

So we decided to do what we can to help restore the Old River, and to help raise greater awareness of the full history of this area. These are big ideas and we are a small group. But we are already growing, and are aware that so many others are acting on these same concerns for our environment, and to build greater knowledge of our true histories. This is important work and we are glad to play even a small part.

This will be an account of our efforts. We appreciate your interest in our projects and invite you to participate in any project that appeals to you. And since most of us are pretty new to social media, we ask for your help in spreading the word.

News about our most recent public project is coming soon!
