Please join the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County and ACT DSABC in congratulating Samantha Clark, the 2026 recipient of the Meredith Portillo Scholarship.
Created in memory of Bexar County Detention Deputy Meredith Portillo, this scholarship honors her life and service by helping family members and dependents of Bexar County detention officers pursue higher education.
Samantha has been accepted to Tarleton State University and is taking the next step toward her lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian. She has already earned her Certified Veterinary Assistant credential, and has spent years serving her community through animal care, food banks, outreach to people experiencing homelessness, and programs for children and adults with special needs.
As the daughter of a detention officer who has served Bexar County for nearly 29 years, Samantha understands the commitment behind the badge. She hopes to one day open an affordable veterinary clinic on San Antonio’s South Side, with a small shelter to care for animals and prepare them for adoption.
Congratulations, Samantha. We are proud to support your education and honored to celebrate Deputy Portillo’s legacy by investing in the future of a member of our detention family. 💙

Join us in congratulating Brandon Plata, recipient of the Noah Calderon Scholarship! 🎓

The Noah Calderon Scholarship is awarded to family members and dependents of detention officers, honoring the sacrifices these families make and investing in their futures.

A recent graduate of IDEA South Flores College Preparatory, Brandon exemplifies everything this scholarship stands for: leadership, service, and heart. As captain of both his varsity volleyball and soccer teams, a National Honor Society member, and a volunteer with more than 500 hours of community service across San Antonio, Brandon has spent his high school years lifting up everyone around him.

This summer, he discovered his calling while interning at CAI Primary Care on the South Side, where he saw firsthand what access to quality healthcare means for a community. This fall, he heads to Texas Tech University where he intends to attend the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing with a dream of becoming a nurse practitioner, and with a promise to make sure people from all walks of life get the care they deserve.

The Deputy Sheriffs Association of Bexar County and ACT are proud to support the families of those who serve and students like Brandon who are building a brighter, healthier future for our community.

Congratulations, Brandon ! We can't wait to see everything you accomplish! 👏

🎓 Congratulations to Geryn Goodell, recipient of the 2026 Kenneth Vann Scholarship!

The Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County and ACT DSABC are proud to award Geryn a $2,500 scholarship as she begins her studies in Criminal Justice at Texas State University.

The daughter of a law enforcement officer and an Air Force veteran, Geryn has grown up seeing what it means to serve others. She hopes to carry that spirit of service forward through a career in forensic science, crime scene investigation, and potentially forensic psychology, helping bring justice and closure to victims and their families.

We are proud to invest in the next generation of students from our law enforcement family. Congratulations, Geryn, and Go Bobcats! 🎓🐾

DSABC President Ron Tooke had the honor of welcoming the newest class of detention cadets at the Bexar County Sheriff's Office today. 👏

These men and women are taking the first step in a career of service, stepping up to one of the toughest and most important jobs in public safety — keeping Bexar County secure. The DSABC is proud to stand behind them from day one, just as we stand behind every deputy and detention officer who wears the uniform.

Welcome to the family, cadets. We've got your back — today, throughout the academy, and for your entire career. 🤝
