SPEAKER BIO:
A lifelong journey of selflessness took on new meaning in 1996 for Howie Nestel with a life-changing lunch with a homeless man in downtown San Antonio. Howie decided to pay it forward to the
disheveled man he had come across many times during his visits to a friend’s business. The lunch made Howie realize he could do more to give a hand up to those in need in the city he so loved.
On December 3, 2023, Howie will be leading San Antonio’s largest one-day collection and food drive. It’s called Gotcha Covered, and Family Violence Prevention Services has been a non-profit recipient of Howie’s creation for the last two dozen years.
Howie likes to joke that he is the world’s poorest philanthropist, but for all the laughs he evokes, his altruism is as rich as it gets. Howie has served on more than 100 non-profit boards and committees, with a specific passion for helping children and the least fortunate.
He recently launched a new nonprofit, Foundation San Antonio, which is gathering $1,000 from 100 donors with the purpose of distributing money and love through remarkable, random acts of kindness.
He is also the Co-Founder of Holocaust Learn & Remember, which in 2023, marked its 10th year of teaching San Antonians about the evils of the Holocaust and its pernicious legacy of hate and violence. This educational initiative, sponsored by The San Antonio Public Library System, works to combat bullying, antisemitism and discrimination.
Howie is currently advocating in a leadership capacity for two additional nonprofits that hold a special place in his heart. He is a Director on the Board of Jewish Family Service, which is one of San Antonio’s most prolific non-profit providers of mental health services to low income and vulnerable demographics.
Howie is also an Ambassador and Advisory Board Chair at Children’s Rehabilitation TeletonUSA (CRIT), which serves children nationwide with neurological, muscular and skeletal disabilities through a comprehensive, compassionate, state-of-the-art model of therapeutic care.
When Howie is not collaborating about kindness, you’re likely to find him swimming with the sharks as Founder and President of San Antonio-based Sharkmatic Advertising. He has provided sales and
marketing services to more than 1,500 companies nationwide including Coca-Cola, DuPont, MTV, and Procter & Gamble, as well as to well-known local and regional industry leaders including Brake Check, Methodist Healthcare and The Wash Tub. In its 35 years as an advertising agency, Sharkmatic has built more than 1,000 client websites including offering a wide range marketing services for nonprofits with limited budgets.
Howie is a proud husband and father of 3 children. He is fluent in English and Spanish. He graduated from the University of Texas Business School in Austin and has lived and worked in Canada, Central America, Europe, Israel, Mexico, and the United States.
