VFW Day of Service: On May 8, 2025, members of VFW Post 12171-D20 conducted a VFW day of service by performing two youth activity actions. One was conduct security operations (Watch Dog) at Linton Elementary School, San Antonio, TX. Second was feeding the teachers and school staff of Linton Elementary School on the same day. The school children enjoyed the safety operations and seeing our veterans walking the areas of the school grounds then the teachers and school staff enjoyed being served a donated lunch for their enjoyment and time of relaxation. Fun and safety had by all!

M’Ryah Mack, a JROTC student at Veterans Memorial High School, participated and represents our VFW 12171 Voice of Democracy high school educational program. We were informed by District 20 that Cadet Mack won at the district level. She will now compete at the state VFW level. Hooah for Cadet Mack!

VFW Post 12171 Commander Lee Rivas, the Texas State Commander Larry Sanders and Texas State Surgeon Gerald Greene met with Dr. Julienne Flynn, Director of the Audie L. Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio, TX. Discussions focused on health care and specialty care provided by the VA to our veterans in South Texas.

Forget Rambo. Raul Benavidez was the real one 🇲🇽🇺🇸

Master Sergeant Raul "Roy" Benavidez, a US soldier during the Vietnam War, performed possibly the most heroic six hours of battle any soldier ever has. When faced with over 1,000 NVA troops, Roy P. Benavidez flew into a gunfight to save 12 Special Forces soldiers with only a knife.
He was shot multiple times and believed dead, until he spit in the face of the medic trying to put him in a body bag. In 1965 Benavidez stepped on a landmine while on patrol disguised as a Vietcong Guerrilla. In 1966 Benavidez was at the hospital were a Doctor told him he wouldn't able to walk any more. Eventually Raul proved the doctor wrong with heart and determination and was able to walk 6 months later. It took 13 years for this man to receive the Medal of Honor.
