Today, the funeral service for Sister Esperanza was held at 10:00 AM in our church sanctuary.

She had deeply wanted to come and worship in our newly purchased chapel, but because of her declining health, she was never able to attend. Today, she finally came to the sanctuary she longed to see, and together we worshiped God.

Now, she has laid aside her weak and painful body that suffered from cancer and has put on a new body through Jesus Christ. Death is not the end, but the day when the body and the spirit are separated. The body returns to the dust from which it came, and the spirit returns to heaven before God.

Now she has put off her frail earthly body. In heaven, there are no more tears, no more cancer, and no more sickness. Though it was a sorrowful day through the eyes of the flesh, through the eyes of the spirit it was a glorious worship service.

Today we should have been overcome with sorrow, yet we gave thanks to the Lord. Before death, we should have been hopeless and despairing, but because Jesus became the firstfruits for us, we have overcome death and the power of the grave through Him.

As I thought about Sister Esperanza going on such a far journey, it felt as though she was saying to me:

“Pastor Choi, do not worry. I am not alone. Holding the hand of Jesus — who became our firstfruits, our life, and our resurrection — I can joyfully and peacefully walk this path that I have never traveled before.”

Sister Esperanza, may you now rest peacefully in the arms of Jesus. I also hope to finish the work of the gospel and see you again soon.

1 Corinthians 15:20

“But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.”

1 Corinthians 15:21–22

“For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead.
For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.”

Through the story of Joseph, we can see that when we choose God’s word instead of hatred and resentment, God gives us true forgiveness, peace, and light.

May we also live with the heart that chooses God’s will above our wounds.
