“Come and eat.”

If you know they have nothing at home, please mean it. Let them take a seat without having to refuse twice.

Try A Little Kindness.

You greeted the boss with a smile, then shouted at the security man for asking you to sign in.

Carry that smile a little further. Everybody deserves respect.

The child broke a plate and immediately begged, “Please don’t be@t me.”

Before you reach for anything, look at how frightened they are.

You can teach them to be careful without making them afraid of you.

Kindness should flow regardless of time or location.

Your friend finally got a job. You’re already listing everything they should do for you.

Ask if they have transport money for their first week.

They said, “Don’t worry, I’m used to it.”

That should trouble you more than an argument would.

“Keep the change” is kind.

Paying someone what you owe them, without making them beg, is kindness too.

The person asking for help may have spent all morning gathering the courage.

Be careful with your first sentence.

THE ONLY LANGUAGE UNDERSTOOD ACROSS ALL CULTURES, SPECIES AND CIVILISATION.

The security man had been practising his signature on the back of an old calendar.

Every night, after the office emptied, Musa would bring it out with a biro and copy the letters from his ID card.

One evening, a young accountant returned for her charger and found him bent over the paper.

He quickly turned it over.

“Oga Musa, what are you writing?”

“Nothing serious.”

She was about to leave when he called her back.

“Please, this letter. Is it facing the correct side?”

She pulled up a chair.

Musa explained that whenever he went to the bank, someone had to help him fill his form. Sometimes they were patient. Sometimes the whole queue heard that he couldn’t write.

“I just want to do my own things myself,” he said.

The next day, she brought an exercise book.

They started with his name and address. Fifteen minutes before she went home, whenever work allowed.

Some evenings, he remembered everything. Other evenings, he mixed up letters they had covered the day before.

She corrected him without laughing.

He kept the book in a nylon bag under his desk.

Months later, Musa stopped her at the gate and brought out a deposit slip.

“I filled it myself.”

She looked through it. His handwriting was large and uneven, but every detail was there.

“Did anybody help you?”

“Only with the date,” he said, laughing. “I forgot today’s date.”

Then he folded the slip carefully and put it back in his pocket.

You may know something so well that you’ve forgotten how difficult it was to learn.

Be patient with someone who is still trying. Let them ask without feeling foolish.
