Welcome to PRISM! We are starting up this nonprofit to create a unique living concept for adults with autism and other intellectual developmental disabilities. With tens of thousands of people "ageing out" of programs for children over the next several years, there is a lack of adequate housing and services in most communities. The systems are full, staff turnover is high, and the rules vary from state to state. Medical providers with the skills to handle extreme patient care are limited, and parents of autistic children often do not have the funds to afford premium care or living facilities for their now "adult" with special needs.
Having been through the systems in several states and being primary caregivers through the pandemic of our non-verbal, non-toilet-trained, 6'2" adult son with severe Autism & other medical conditions, we knew there had to be others experiencing similar situations. We are incredibly grateful for our son's placement in a group home with the most loving, dedicated staff and therapists, yet we realize he will have 30+ years to just exist in a small house with limited interactions. This is why we decided to create another option... PRISM Communities.
PRISM's first community is this online presence. We are here to share our progress & struggles and hope you will share yours with us. Parents of teens about to age out of school can gather information about rules and services in their area and can access help navigating their child's transition to adult services.
PRISM is a dream where those on the highest levels of the spectrum can have a joy-filled life, customized to their unique needs. Please Join Us on this journey!
