Across Indigenous communities, language is more than a way to communicate.
It carries identity, history, traditional knowledge, and the connections between generations.

There is encouraging news.

U.S. federal funding records for 2026 show investments in Indigenous language education, revitalization, immersion programs, and community-led learning initiatives.

These efforts remind us that language preservation is not only about protecting the past. It is about creating opportunities for the future.

At Social & Health Equities, Inc, we believe Indigenous communities and speakers of lower-diffusion languages deserve meaningful access to education, resources, healthcare, and opportunities to thrive.

Because every language carries knowledge worth protecting.
And every community deserves to be heard.

A language is more than words. It carries identity, knowledge, history, and community.

This week brought encouraging news for Indigenous language preservation.

The U.S. Department of the Interior brought together Tribal leaders, educators, students, tribal colleges, and Native language organizations for the Forum on Native Languages and Education—creating space to share what is working in Native language revitalization across communities.

The conversation included Native language programming, technology, education, and initiatives supporting living languages.

For Social & Health Equities, Inc. (Shequity), this work matters deeply.

Language equity means recognizing that communities speaking Indigenous and lower-diffusion languages deserve investment too—not only when there are large numbers of speakers.

When a language is supported, we help protect more than communication.

We help strengthen identity, knowledge, belonging, education, and future generations.

A new season brings new opportunities to strengthen the way we care for and connect with our communities.

But for many Indigenous communities and speakers of lower-diffusion languages, essential information and services are still not consistently available in the languages they understand best.

That can affect more than communication.

It can affect a person’s ability to understand their healthcare, make informed decisions, access resources, and fully participate in their community.

At Social & Health Equities, we believe equity must include communities and languages that are too often left out of traditional systems.

Our nonprofit work supports a future where:

🌎 Indigenous and lower-diffusion languages are recognized and valued
🗣️ Meaningful language access reaches more communities
🎓 Multilingual professionals have opportunities to learn and grow

Some of the most important gaps in our communities are the ones people encounter every day.

Understanding healthcare information.

Finding services in a language they understand.

Navigating complicated systems.

Accessing training and career opportunities.

Building trust with the organizations meant to serve them.

Nonprofits can play an important role in connecting these pieces.

Through language access, workforce development, community health, trusted partnerships, and culturally responsive support, community-based organizations can help turn barriers into pathways.

Because equity isn't created by one program or organization.

It is built through connection.

🌎 A powerful reminder from this week: maternal health is also about language, culture, and community.

The United Nations’ 2026 Indigenous Peoples observance honored Indigenous midwives and their role in protecting health, knowledge, identity, and community well-being.

For Shequity, this connects directly to language and health equity.
A maternal-health conversation may include:
🗣️ Indigenous language
👶 Birth traditions
👵🏽 Intergenerational knowledge
🤝 Family and community relationships
❤️ Patient choice and autonomy
🏥 Clinical care

Qualified interpreters matter—but so does listening to the people and knowledge systems already trusted by the community.

Language access is a healthcare quality and patient-safety issue.

A recent review of healthcare research, federal regulations, and professional guidelines found that approximately 68 million people in the United States prefer to communicate in a language other than English.

When professional language support is unavailable, patients may experience:

• Difficulty understanding diagnoses and medical instructions
• Reduced participation in healthcare decisions
• Delays and disruptions in care
• Increased risk of communication errors and adverse events
• Lower continuity and quality of care

The evidence shows that professional interpreters and language-concordant care can improve patient understanding, treatment adherence, safety, and the overall healthcare experience.

The authors recommend that healthcare systems:

✓ Prioritize consistent access to professional interpreters
✓ Accurately identify and document language preferences
✓ Establish standards for assessing qualified bilingual staff
✓ Integrate language access into healthcare technology
✓ Avoid relying on untrained staff or family members
