Safety City of San Angelo, Inc.

Safety City of San Angelo, Inc. Safety City of San Angelo, Inc. is an independent, community-based 501 (c) 3, organized solely for the purpose of providing life-saving education.

The History of Safety City
Safety City is a miniature town where school age children can learn hands-on the rules of fire, pedestrian, bicycle and traffic safety. It was built over fifty years ago on a lot owned by the San Angelo Independent School District. The San Angelo Fire Department, Fire Marshal’s Office and City of San Angelo Police Department have provided officers to operate Safety City

and provide instruction for third grade students from both private and public schools. Just as our community has grown over the past fifty years, so have the safety needs of our families and their children. Safety City cannot operate to maximum capacity and quality performance due to its current location and dilapidated condition. Plans are under way for a new, modern Safety City with expanded facilities and capabilities that can better address the changing safety concerns of protecting our community. Friends of Safety City formed a non-profit organization consisting of non-paid volunteers with a volunteer board of directors. Although it is in its preliminary stages, we are looking forward to having a state of the art facility where children, and families, learn real life strategies for dealing with emergencies while developing a positive attitude toward safety. Safety City of San Angelo will combine traditional classroom education methods with unique interactive experiences in a realistic child-sized townscape, complete with buildings, roads with realistic pavement markings, traffic signals and street signs. Interactive areas will include an actual living room and kitchen which will illustrate various fire safety hazards such as a lighter and matches, candles, frayed electrical cords and an overloaded electrical outlet. A child-sized bedroom will be equipped with a nontoxic “smoke machine” that will demonstrate to students how smoke fills a room during a fire. Children then will have the opportunity to practice escaping safety from a bedroom through either their primary or backup escape route. Pedestrian, bicycle and motor vehicle safety will be taught in an outdoor environment while operating battery powered vehicles and riding bicycles on realistic streets. Safety City of San Angelo will afford children the unique opportunity of practicing safety skills within a safe environment, while remaining under the watchful eye of trained educators. Our goal is to provide a hands-on, fun place where children of all ages learn how to play it safe everywhere, every day. We will do this with the generous support of local developers and businesses with no fee for our participants. The Safety City Project
Phase 1: Provide basic upgrades and necessary improvements to the existing safety city based upon a short term life span which provides basic functionality for the organization until the new facility can be built. Phase 2: Secure land and build a new state of the art facility that better meets the needs of our community.
