Edwin Nelson Named Artie Lee Hinds Employee of the Year for the State of Texas

Austin, Texas โ€” September 23, 2026 โ€” West Texas Lighthouse for the Blind is proud to announce that Edwin Nelson, foreman at the Lighthouseโ€™s Abilene location, has been named the 2026 Artie Lee Hinds Award recipient, recognizing him as an outstanding employee with a disability participating in the Texas State Use WorksWonders Program.

Presented annually by WorkQuest, the Artie Lee Hinds Award recognizes an exceptional employee whose dedication, work performance, personal growth and commitment to their job exemplify the impact of meaningful employment. WorkQuestโ€™s WorksWonders Program provides employment opportunities for Texans with disabilities across the state. More than 6,100 individuals with disabilities were employed through the program in 2025.

Edwin was selected from employees participating in the program across Texas, making this statewide recognition a tremendous honor for both Edwin and West Texas Lighthouse for the Blind.

As foreman of the Lighthouseโ€™s Abilene location, Edwin plays an important role in the daily operation of the facility. He provides leadership and support to his team while helping ensure that work is completed efficiently, accurately and to the high standards expected by Lighthouse customers.

Congratulations, Edwin! We are incredibly proud of you and all that you have accomplished.

We were deeply honored to present Congressman August Pfluger with the AbilityOne Champion award. This recognition is given to congressional leaders who actively champion employment for people who are blind or have significant disabilities. Congressman Pfluger is a steadfast advocate for the Lighthouse and our mission, and he was so generous with his time during his visit, meeting with many of our visually impaired employees. Thank you for your continued support, Congressman!
