Friends of Calaveras Animal Services - FOCAS

Friends of Calaveras Animal Services - FOCAS FOCAS is a 100% volunteer run nonprofit dedicated to helping the animals at Calaveras County Animal Services in San Andreas, California What is FOCAS?

FRIENDS OF CALAVERAS ANIMAL SERVICES โ€œFOCASโ€

Friends of Calaveras Animal Services (FOCAS) is an animal welfare organization dedicated to enhancing a humane Animal Services program for the people and animals of Calaveras County, California. Comprised entirely of volunteers, it is dedicated to relieving over-crowding at the county animal shelter through spay and neuter and community education; pro

moting the health of abused and abandoned animals; reducing unnecessary euthanasia; and helping to expedite the movement of homeless dogs, cats and other animals into permanent, loving homes. FOCAS was founded in January, 2014 as a support group for Calaveras County Animal Services in order to achieve a humane and comprehensive Animal Services program with an emphasis on maintaining a quality animal shelter and maximum responsible adoptions of animals. The county facility is 60-years-old and dangerously inadequate. Due to budgetary constraints, the county does not provide the funding or manpower necessary to meet the needs of the community. The number of homeless animals cared for is often limited by financial resources and available housing space. Education, spay and neuter clinics and other forms of public outreach necessary to reduce the unwanted animal population are also under-funded. FOCAS volunteers are charged with raising awareness of and funding for Animal Services programs and facility improvements that support its mission statement. FOCAS is a self-sustaining, volunteer organization with no significant start up costs. FOCAS will work to achieve its long-range goals through a combined effort of community fundraising events, grant writing and public outreach.

We just read the 2025-26 Calaveras County Civil Grand Jury's report on Calaveras County Animal Services. Here's the article from the Valley Springs News, but if you'd like to read the whole report (we recommend it), here is where you can find it: https://grandjury.calaverasgov.us/Portals/grandjury/Documents/Reports/Individual%20Reports/2025%20-%202026/2026%20CCCGJ%20Report%20-%20Animal%20Services.pdf

Last weekend was our second largest clinic to date, and also the hottest! ๐Ÿฅต Thank you to everyone who came out for your patience while our volunteers were put to the test. We gave out 217 Rabies vaccines and 63 microchips, even after we had to close the line early because of the heat! ๐ŸŽ‰

Dr. Gatlin is a rock star! ๐ŸŒŸ Calaveras County is so lucky to have her here. She continually shows up to these clinics to serve the community year after year, even when we put her through the wringer. Please thank her when you see her and let her know how appreciated she is! ๐Ÿ™

We couldn't provide these clinics without our dedicated volunteers and community support. ๐Ÿ’ช Thank you for making Calaveras County that much safer and welcoming for people and animals. ๐Ÿพ ๐Ÿซถ

๐Ÿ‘‰ Our next clinic will be Saturday, September 12th at Spence Ranch Feed in Angels Camp. It will be a Rabies vaccine clinic ONLY (no microchips). Be sure to mark your calendar now so you don't miss it! โœ๏ธ ๐Ÿ—“๏ธ

This Tuesday, June 9, the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote on approving the loan to build a new animal shelter.

The current shelter has served our community for many years, but it's inadequate, unsanitary, and too small for the needs of the county, and it has been for 20+ years. A new shelter would provide safer, healthier, and more humane conditions for homeless animals while expanding the county's ability to care for them.

FOCAS is encouraging all animal lovers, adopters, volunteers, and community members to attend the Board of Supervisors meeting and show your support for this critical project. If you're a member of FOCAS or Gimme Shelter or ANY animal protection organization, please show up wearing your T-shirts and make our presence known!

Every seat in the room sends a message that Calaveras County cares about its animals.

Please attend if you can, wear your FOCAS shirt if you have one, and consider speaking during public comment in support of the new shelter.

Together, we can help create a brighter future for the animals of Calaveras County. โค๏ธ๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ
