Today is Commodity day. Active list pickup time is 11am to 1pm and waiting list time is 1pm to 2pm. Please be sure to pickup and if you can’t please make arrangements for someone to pickup for you. We need volunteers. If you would like to help us distribute the food boxes to seniors come on down.

Tucked into a narrow valley off KY 122 in Floyd County, the old coal town of Wheelwright once had more than 2,300 men on its payroll and over 2,000 people calling it home. The company that built it put up the houses, the stores, the churches, even the hospital, all in neat brick and frame buildings that still stand today.

Wheelwright started in 1916, when a local family sold the land to the Elk Horn Coal Company. Inland Steel took it over in 1930, and under their ownership the town hit its peak in 1950, complete with a Colonial Revival clubhouse that had a hotel, a restaurant, a library, and even a bowling alley in the basement. For a few decades, it felt like the mine would run forever. ⛏️

Here's the part that still surprises people: when the mine finally shut down in the 1970s, the population didn't just dip, it collapsed, from over 2,000 residents down to roughly 500 today, a drop of three quarters. The old downtown is still remarkably intact and sits on the National Register of Historic Places, a ghost of a company town that once ran like a small city of its own.
