Happy National Equality Day! Today marks the day the 19th Amendment was officially adopted into the United States Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Today also acknowledges the ongoing work needed to reach full gender equality. 💛🤍💜

In this 1915 illustration entitled, “The Awakening” by Henry Mayer, depicts the nation’s desire for suffrage, beginning in Western states and striding towards the east. Many Western states, including Utah, paved the way for women’s voting rights in the United States. Utah gained a prominent, though complicated, place in the national women’s rights movement. Utah’s growing economic interdependence led to greater cooperation and political alignment with the rest of the United States. And even today, Americans are constantly renegotiating the balance between federal and state power as different issues come to the fore. 🏛️

"Crowne Books will be part of the Utah Humanities statewide Book Festival this October with Black Frontiers, celebrating local black authors."

"Owner and founder of Crowne Books, Olivia Nightingale says, as far as she knows, Crowne Books would be the first Black-owned brick and mortar bookstore in Utah, hosting events such as Fangs & Fiction to raise money for sickle cell research while geeking-out over black vampire literature in September. She says the proceeds would go to helping research the disease that disproportionately afflicts black people.

Happy 19th Amendment Ratification Day! 🎉 On this day, 106 years ago, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the amendment, reaching the three-fourths threshold needed to make it part of the U.S. Constitution!

In this photo, Utah suffragists Hannah S. Lapish, Emmeline B. Wells, Lily C. Wolstenholme, Elizabeth Hayward, Margaret Zane Cherdron, and Lucy A. Clark stand with National Woman’s Party leaders and Senator Reed Smoot outside the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake City in August 1915. Utah suffragists worked with the NWP to harness the power of women voters in the West to support a federal women's suffrage amendment.

Utah women first gained the right to vote in 1870, a full 50 years before the 19th Amendment was ratified. Utah suffragists helped pave the way for women across the country to gain the vote. ✨
