Utah Hazara Association Holds 30th Martyrdom Commemoration of Abdul Ali Mazari in Salt Lake City
Salt Lake City, UT – April 2025 – The Utah Hazara Association hosted a heartfelt and dignified event in Salt Lake City to mark the 30th anniversary of the martyrdom of Abdul Ali Mazari, the revered leader and voice of the Hazara people. The gathering brought together members of the Hazara community, local allies, and the Afghan diaspora to remember the life, sacrifice, and vision of a man who stood for justice, unity, and equality in Afghanistan.

The event featured a range of activities including recitations from the Holy Quran, speeches, poetry readings, a short documentary on Mazari’s life, and traditional Hazara music. Community leaders and youth representatives reflected on Mazari’s enduring legacy and his dream of a united, inclusive Afghanistan where all ethnic and religious groups live with equal rights and dignity.

Honored guest Dr. Qasim Wafayezada, former Minister of Information and Culture and a professor at Kanazawa University in Japan, spoke about the important role of Shaheed Mazari in uniting the Hazara people and promoting solidarity among Afghanistan’s ethnic groups.

Another guest, Attorney Mahdi Rasikh, encouraged the community to maintain unity, pursue education, and build the capacity of the Hazara diaspora. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the value of togetherness and continuing the path of growth and self-empowerment.

Abdul Ali Mazari was a prominent Afghan political leader and a key figure for the Hazara people, an ethnic group in Afghanistan that has faced long-standing persecution and discrimination. He is remembered as a courageous leader who advocated for justice, equality, and the rights of all Afghan people, especially minorities.
Political Role
During the Soviet-Afghan War (1979–1989), Mazari became active in the resistance. He co-founded the political party Hezb-e Wahdat-e Islami Afghanistan (Islamic Unity Party of Afghanistan) in the late 1980s. The party aimed to unify different Shi'a factions and represent the Hazara people’s interests in the chaotic political landscape of Afghanistan.

Hezb-e Wahdat played a crucial role in fighting against both Soviet forces and later, rival Afghan factions during the civil war that followed the Soviet withdrawal.
Vision and Beliefs
Mazari’s political vision went beyond ethnic lines. He strongly believed in a federal system of government that would guarantee equal rights for all ethnic and religious groups in Afghanistan, including Hazaras, Tajiks, Uzbeks, and Pashtuns. He spoke out against sectarianism and called for national unity, democracy, and social justice.
Martyrdom and Legacy
In March 1995, Abdul Ali Mazari was captured by the Taliban during peace talks. He was tortured and killed by the Taliban, becoming a martyr in the eyes of many Afghans, especially the Hazara community. His death shocked the nation and is seen as a symbol of the brutality faced by ethnic minorities under extremist rule.

He is often referred to as "Shaheed Mazari" (Martyr Mazari), and every year, Hazaras and others in Afghanistan and abroad hold commemoration ceremonies in his honor.
