Sometimes people say, ‘Let me know if you need anything,’ but during postpartum, especially when experiencing anxiety or depression, coming up with an answer can feel overwhelming. It’s much easier when someone asks, ‘How are you doing? What do you need? I can bring a meal, come over and wash your dishes, or pick up groceries.’ Offering specific options makes it possible to accept help without feeling like another task has been added to your plate, and it can make a world of difference on a hard day." - Melinda Fonda, PSI-Utah Volunteer Coordinator

"For a long time I believed that rest was something I earned after working myself to death. As I’ve been able to embrace that is a necessity I’ve felt much more grounded, intentional and able to handle the stressors or in my life." - Misty DeMann, PSI-Utah Professional Outreach

The Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (PRAMS), a CDC program that provides jurisdiction-specific, population-based data on mothers' experiences and health before, during, and after pregnancy, was discontinued in 2025 as part of federal budget cuts. PRAMS data have long played an important role in evidence-based maternal mental health policy, program development, and advocacy at the state level, including here in Utah.
There is now a limited window to submit public comments in support of PRAMS. The Federal register is accepting comments through Tuesday, January 20.

In reality, many people who are experiencing Perinatal Mental Health Disorders still accomplish taking care of their child and may look “fine” or “normal” from an outside perspective. Phrases like this are said to parents and can make them feel like their depression or anxiety isn’t valid or “that bad” because they are still taking care of their child. If you are feeling unwell you deserve help.
