Salt Lake Peer Court is a free and voluntary program that helps youth who have committed minor offenses at school or in the community avoid going through the traditional juvenile court system. This program has proved to be helpful since our own referred youth have said: "My mentor was helpful because he/she/they were always there to keep me company and support me in any way he/she/they could."

As human beings, we all have complex lives and a lot on our plates. So do at-risk youth! American psychologist Urie Bronfenbrenner proposed this ecological theory model which shows us that a person's actions cannot simply be explained by one single factor. Our environment, our family, friends, work, school, the culture, the government all play a huge part in the ways we act. Instead of telling yourself or people around you that bad deeds mean that we are inherently bad, let's step back and think about how other things might be impacting us as well. If a teenager is skipping school and no longer takes interest in their hobbies, is there a possibility that they might be depressed? How about when a kid is hyperfocused on certain things, but seem to never be able to meet school deadlines? They could be neurodiverse and may need more creative education styles to help foster growth. So next time, before judging a person solely based on their actions, look at the bigger picture, you might be surprised to see that we aren't all that different. We are all human!

In legal dramas, you often see the witnesses in courtrooms take the stand and
sworn in. At the Salt Lake Peer Court, you can watch this process in action as our youth volunteers ask the referred youth: “Do you promise that the information you provide to Salt Lake Peer Court shall be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth?" Even though this is part of the Peer Court process, we are still a diversion program that prevents marginalized youth from receiving a criminal record.

Many people often hear the name "Peer Court" and wonder, what do we do? This flyer explains our motives, intentions and goals. Peer Court consists of a wonderful panel of high school youth that volunteer their time to steer at-risk youth in the juvenile justice center in the right direction in the hopes of focusing on rehabilitation instead of enforcing punitive actions. With a panel of teenagers interacting with the marginalized youth, the power dynamic has shifted, and after having a conversation as equals, these youth realize that they are not alone in life and there are actually other people their age that care. As of right now, we are recruiting both youth and adult volunteers to join us in paying it forward and taking part in this meaningful experience.
