The safety of our community depends on the ability to recruit, retain, and take care of our Firefighters, and this letter to the editor in the The Salt Lake Tribune hits the nail on the head.

Improving Utah’s Tier 2 retirement system isn’t just about when Firefighters can retire- it’s about protecting our long-term health, keeping experienced Firefighters on the job, and investing in the safety of our communities. A fair and sustainable retirement system is an investment in public safety, and two Firefighters on the same crew should earn the same retirement- they’re already facing the same danger.

We are devastated to mourn the unexpected passing of Local 81 Firefighter Gabe Reilly, and we extend our deepest condolences to the entire Reilly family.

Our broken hearts are with his family, friends, and fellow firefighters during this tremendously difficult time. Gabe was one of us, and he will never be forgotten.

Please respect his family’s privacy as they grieve.

25 years ago today, FDNY Firefighters accomplished the greatest rescue in history and the world changed forever. In the following days, Salt Lake City Firefighters deployed with others from throughout Utah to Ground Zero to help. Many of those that responded 25 years ago now run calls with Firefighters who have no memory of that terrible day- they weren’t born yet.

This morning, at 8:46 AM, Salt Lake City Firefighters all over our city stood at attention, in silent respect and reverence for the sacrifice of so many on that terrible day.

We never forget.

Happy Labor Day! Today and every other day, we honor the generations of Union Firefighters and all of the working men and women who fought for a safer workplace, fair wages, and a voice on the job.

Politicians won’t silence that voice- we remain committed to the dignity, fair treatment, and safety of our Firefighters and every worker. Labor built this country; organized labor has made it stronger.

We’re proud to carry that tradition forward.

We had a great time this morning hanging out with our friends from the University of Utah Burn Center at Camp Nah Nah Mah- a camp is dedicated to children who have experienced burn injuries.

We fired up the griddles and served a breakfast of pancakes, bacon, eggs, and hash browns with a side of smiles and good vibes! We look forward to cooking breakfast for these amazing kids all year, and it was a special morning at on the mountain- thank you to the dedicated and amazing staff for having us!

Our brother, Chris Bluth, was larger than life and his legacy will continue to echo throughout the Fire Service in our state and beyond. He spent a career helping people in their greatest hour of need, mentoring hundreds of Firefighters, and teaching our profession to thousands. His passing is devastating.

Our Firefighters are headed to Seattle in March to climb for a cure- they’ll race up 69 floors of the Columbia Tower in full gear and on air with Firefighters from across the world to raise money for the fight against blood cancers.
