Dear Friends and Community,

The Center for Equity and Student Belonging has been a staple of support for historically underserved populations here at the University of Utah since it was first established as the “Minority Center” in 1972. Over the past 52 years, while the name has changed, Center for Ethnic Student Affairs (CESA) in June of 1973, and Center for Equity and Student Belonging (CESB) in Fall 2021, the commitment to serving and impacting students so they can thrive at the U and beyond has always been core.

As we look towards the future and adaptations that need to be made for the U to be in compliance with HB 261, we do not want to miss out on an opportunity to pause and celebrate the staff, impact, and legacy of CESB Through the Ages. To that end we hope you will join us on June 27, 2024 from 3-6pm in the CESB Lounge to gather in community, joy, and celebration of this very special space.

This U Giving Day, we need your help with supporting scholarships for students who are interested in living in and participating in the Diversity Scholars Living-Learning Community at the University of Utah. Diversity Scholars is the Center for Equity & Student Belonging - University of Utah first-year student cohort. The program supports students through specialized workshops and course offerings, regular interactions with faculty and staff of color, multiple mentoring relationships, and off-campus community engagement opportunities.

The program also provides first-year students at the U with a community of like-minded peers on campus, and now with our Living-Learning Community, there is an added support element of a living-in community with this tight-knit group of peers. Living in university housing can be expensive which can create barriers for students when it comes to participating in this added opportunity. With Giving day 2024, CESB aims to provide financial support so more students, especially those with demonstrated financial need, can access and participate in the Living Learning Community.

Call to High School students! is hosting their 2024 Black and African Diaspora High School Conference on Thurs, Feb 1st from 8:00-2:00pm at the A. Ray Olpin Student Union.

Keynote: Latodda Wallace, founder & coach of DSSD. Their vision is to empower the next gen through Christ, talent, and education under one roof.

This year's theme is Empowering Excellence: Unlocking the brilliance and potential in each attendee ✨ Overall a full day to explore vibrant experiences of the U of U's Black and African Diaspora community through workshops, campus tours, panels, food, performances from , an awesome Step Team from Atlanta, Georgia!

Save the date for Navigating Four-Ward with the Pasifika Navigators and Four-Ward Voice! ❄️

Monday, 1/22 from 4-6pm at Child Hall (7th floor in SFEBB)

This event will feature stories from the Pasifika and Native American communities around the idea of winter and the continuation of life through the seasons! ✨️ Everyone is invited to stop by and hear some amazing stories! We will also have an open mic portion for folks that catch inspiration. We hope to see you there!

Mark your calendar for the AIRC and CESB Winter Holiday Celebration this Thursday! ✨ The food will be potluck style with the AIRC and CESB providing the main two dishes. We'll also be doing a gift exchange and a cultural game during the event.
