On behalf of our members, FRIENDS frequently participates in agency processes related to the management of the Lake, including commenting on draft Utah Division of Water Quality discharge permits like this one.

FRIENDS considers this participation to be critical to our mission and to be valuable as a means of influencing the administration of the Lake and of protecting and preserving the Lake ecosystem.

Thanks to our General Counsel, Rob Dubuc, for leading this effort and preparing thorough comments that help protect Great Salt Lake.

Meet 2026 Doyle W. Stephens Scholarship recipient, Lauren Whelton!

As a graduate student at University of Utah, Lauren has been researching recovery dynamics of microbialite communities following environmental disturbance at Great Salt Lake.

This summer, Great Salt Lake is once again approaching record low water levels. Large areas of microbialites are exposed and desiccating.

As the foundation of the Lake’s food web, it’s critical to understand how desiccation impacts microbialite communities and their ability to recover.

Early results from Lauren’s research offer hope that this ecosystem is resilient—just add water.

Help us keep Great Salt Lake shark free by supporting our Summer Giving Campaign. 🦈

Read Holly’s letter at the link below to learn about what we’ve accomplished together since May (and why Jaws might be the movie of the summer...).

As we remain vigilant, don’t forget to reconnect with the Lake we’re working so hard to preserve and protect. If you have an opportunity to go for a float this summer, take it.

Sharks don’t belong near Great Salt Lake, but you do.

The National Audubon Society has released a new assessment using habitat, hydrology, and climate modeling to illustrate the importance of the Great Salt Lake and the waterbirds that its wetlands support.

What a great first week of Salty Science Summer Camp with Youth Education at the University of Utah!

We tested water quality at City Creek with USU Water Quality Extension & Utah Water Watch, identified birds at Eccles Wildlife Education Center, studied geology & life cycles at Great Salt Lake State Park, and finished the week floating with the brine shrimp (and Pink Floyd 🦩) at Antelope Island State Park.

As Great Salt Lake once again nears historic record low levels, these moments are even more precious.

Thanks to our partners and our adventurous campers for exploring the ecosystem with us and learning about how we can help protect it.

If you are familiar with the water woes facing the Great Salt Lake, this is what we are fighting for. There is no place more beautiful than the lake on a calm evening with a grand, colorful sunset on display. It's one of many reasons we need to save the dwindling lake. FRIENDS of Great Salt Lake
