Next generation of Tele skiers = 🔥

This weekend I had the opportunity to introduce a group of young Nordic skiers from the Utah Nordic Alliance (T.U.N.A.) to Telemark skiing as they wrapped up their season and took their first turns on freeheel gear.

I donated a dozen or so kids’ Telemark setups (skis, boots, bindings) from my rental fleet for weekend use to help get them on snow.

Even better — I got to present alongside Utah legends Dave Hanscom and RJ Guiney. Hearing their stories and seeing their photos was a powerful reminder of how deep the roots of Telemark run here.

RJ helped create the Wasatch Telemark Race Series in the early ’80s, and Dave’s impact on backcountry skiing and avalanche education in the Wasatch is hard to overstate. Not to mention his huge contributions to Nordic skiing.

Huge thank you to my friend Ann for getting me involved in this project 🙌

This is what it’s all about — growing the community and passing it on.

Twenty four Comp and Junior Comp skiers got it done today at Soho. They made a decision on wax, waxed their own skis, and skied a classic time trial.

It hasn't been the easiest year to learn to be a ski racer, but this crew has been working on the details.

Thanks to for the crisp tracks we used to check our work.

Spruces Campground has the best track around, and we are doing our best to share it. Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30-5:45 are the busiest times, with junior programs meeting to try and get some time on snow after school.

This year has been so difficult for everyone in terms of snow. We are so grateful to the .s.forestservice for collaborating with TUNA to write and receive a grant for new grooming equipment, and for the TUNA and Forest Service groomers for working so hard to make all of our learning programs, adult and junior, see some snow.

Moms, dads, and a couple of junior team skiers helped our LTS coordinator Matt Stewart kick off the 2026 edition of Learn-to-ski today at Spruces.

The weather was kind of frightful, but the kids were simply delightful. A few games and an adventure ski easily filled the hour, and there was candy.

UPDATE: Striding (classic) is a green light! Please don't skate yet. Today's soft skate marks become ungroomable as it freezes tonight with a cold front. (Plus, you'll likely bottom out).

Snow! The grooming crew is assessing the unexpected bounty at Mountain Dell. After 40+ degree temperatures and rain, it is often necessary let the snow dry out before grooming.

Please be patient while our fantastic crews do their magic. It will be worth it!
