Aloha PHA Ohana,
We learned more about the new guidance from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security stating that federal immigration officers will now be allowed to enforce immigration laws in and near sensitive areas including schools. We know this is a concern for many in our community and want you to know we are aware of this policy change.
We want to let you know of a these important things:
Please know that your child - and every child, regardless of immigration status - is welcome at PHA and every other school. Undocumented children and young adults have the right to attend public schools as U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
For many reasons, it is important for parents/guardians to make sure their own contact information and the contact information for their studentʻs emergency contacts is up to date. This can be done by speaking with the ladies in the office. Each student should have at least two emergency contacts. These individuals do not need to be family members; they can be trusted adult designated by the studentʻs parent/guardian.
PHA does NOT collect information related to any student or family members' immigration status. Because we do not collect this information, it is not information we can provide to any law enforcement agency.
PHA will not initiate engagement with federal immigration authorities for the purpose of sharing student information.
We have counselors at every one of our schools who are available to talk with your student if they experience any anxiety, stress, or fears related to the federal policy changes.
We are very committed to providing a safe, equitable, inclusive and supportive learning environment for your child.
