This month, we’re celebrating the official opening of 1.2 new miles of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail (BST) in the Herriman foothills.

And...it almost didn’t happen.

Back in 2018, an early route followed the ridgeline above the valley. But the actual Bonneville bench, marked by smooth, rounded stones from an ancient shoreline, sat lower on the mountain. Jo Darton saw the opportunity to bring the trail closer to that history and set out to map a better route.

That decision shaped everything that followed.

The best trails connect stories, landscapes, and the people willing to reimagine what’s possible.

⚠️ Heading to Mill B, Grit Mill, Monks Hollow, or Upper Grotto this summer?

Starting June 1, these trailheads now require a recreation pass for parking. They join other parking fee areas, including:

• Silver Lake Recreation Complex
• Cardiff Fork / Mill D
• Donut Falls
• Mount Timpanogos Trailhead
• and more

Not sure where fees apply, how to pay, or whether an annual pass makes sense?

We put together a quick guide covering which trailheads charge parking fees, how payment works, and where to get passes 👇

In case you were planning to join us this morning for the Herriman BST ribbon cutting and member hike, we’ve decided to cancel — and hopefully reschedule — due to the heavier-than-expected rain.

We’re disappointed, but grateful for the moisture. Enjoy the rainy Saturday, and we’ll share an update soon.

Statewide recognition doesn’t mean the work is finished 👣

Connecting the Bonneville Shoreline Trail into one continuous trail seems simple, but it’s a patchwork. Some segments are complete, others hinge on handshake agreements, outdated easements, or parcels that were never formally secured for public access.

Because each gap sits on different land, moving forward means working piece by piece: coordinating with private landowners, revisiting unmaintained easements, and navigating overlapping land uses. Add in the legal, ecological, geographic, and jurisdictional layers, and progress depends on alignment just as much as construction.

If you believe in seeing the BST fully connected, become a member and take your place in that process. Your support helps move each segment forward, one parcel at a time.

A reminder that fee-free days are lining up over the long holiday weekends across both National Forests and National Parks—starting with Memorial Day this Monday! 🇺🇸🏔️

The 2026 fee-free public lands calendar has been shifting, and depending on the source, the dates don’t fully align between National Forests and National Parks. To make it easier, we pulled everything into two graphics you can save and share, covering both systems and calling out where the dates differ.

Coming up next, June 6, National Trails Day, will be fee-free across the National Park and Forest System. We’ll keep tracking updates as the rest gets clarified.

The best way to spend a Saturday morning? A hike in the foothills, learning the landscape from a Red Butte Garden botanist!

This past weekend, our second community hike brought a group of trail enthusiasts onto the Quarry Loop, one of our projects, and up to , with plenty of plant stops to learn along the way.

Want to meet the folks who build, maintain, protect, and plan the trails and open spaces we all use? 👀

Join us at Mountain Trails Foundation's 3rd Annual Regional Trails Mixer on May 13 from 5–8 PM. Trails Utah will be there alongside a bunch of other trail, recreation, and outdoor organizations from across Utah.

It’s a fun way to meet the people behind the trails, learn what different groups are working on, and connect with the broader trails community. Plus: free food, a cash bar, and a great excuse to spend an evening talking trails ⛰️
