The ACE crew came back for one more round on the Red Butte Quarry Loop! 🥾

From September 21–30, our American Conservation Experience (ACE) crew was back on the trail helping us finish up the remaining work for Phase II.

Earlier this year, they spent several weeks tackling some of the heavier maintenance along the route, including rock work, tread improvements, drainage, and closing old, eroded shortcuts. This time, the crew took on a new section of trail near the historic Quarry House, installed fencing to help protect historic features, and hauled in everything needed to get the work done.

This project has been in the works since 2023, so having ACE back for this latest round was a pretty exciting milestone. Stay tuned for some behind-the-scenes photos of just how much work went into these final improvements.

If you've hiked the Red Butte Quarry Loop recently, some of the biggest improvements might be the ones you didn't immediately notice.

Earlier this spring, trained crews from American Conservation Experience spent several weeks doing heavy maintenance throughout the route.

They completed rock work to improve footing, leveled sections of trail tread, installed drains that move water off the trail instead of allowing it to run straight down it, and "junked up" old eroded trails and user-created shortcuts so traffic stays on the route we're working to maintain.

That's an important part of this project. We're not simply putting signs on a collection of existing trails and calling it a loop. We're putting work into the route itself so there's a clear, sustainable trail for people to actually follow.

ACE will be back later this month for the final round of work, and we'll show you what they're up to when they arrive.

We're calling this Phase II of the Red Butte Quarry Loop because we're finally down to the last round of work.

A lot of the heavy trail maintenance was completed this spring, but there are still some important pieces to put in place before we consider the project finished.

That includes new wayfinding signs to make the nearly 2-mile route easier to follow, interpretive signs explaining the quarry and human history found along the way, and sections of fencing around the historic stone wall and loading dock where wagons were once loaded with sandstone bound for building sites in the valley.

Those additions are a big part of what we originally hoped this project could become: not simply another route through the foothills, but a well-maintained and clearly marked loop where residents and visitors can understand both where they're going and what they're looking at.

If all goes as planned, we'll wrap things up by mid-fall and celebrate with a ribbon-cutting 🎗️

There's quite a bit hiding in the hills above Research Park that you'd probably never notice on a normal hike.

Sandstone quarrying here dates back to the years following the establishment of Camp Douglas in 1862. By the 1880s, the Salt Lake & Fort Douglas Railway was hauling tons of sandstone out of the area for the growing local building market. Portions of today's Red Butte Quarry Loop even follow old wagon roads once traveled by oxen and mules carrying loads of stone.

The story continues into the Great Depression, when WPA crews worked throughout the area. One remnant is the Quarry House, which served as a garage and warming shack, while stone from the quarry above it was used for sidewalks, gutters, culverts, bridges, and other improvements at Fort Douglas.

And those are exactly the kinds of stories you'll soon be able to learn while you're on the trail.

As part of Phase II, we're installing interpretive signs around the loop that point out the quarry sites and other features and explain some of the more than 13,000 years of human activity that have shaped this landscape.

We're excited to be part of the Utah Public Lands Partners Market, where organizations from across Utah come together to connect people with volunteer opportunities, stewardship projects, and the work happening behind the scenes on our public lands.
