This Earth Day, we’re grateful for the Glen 🧡

At Glen Canyon Institute, we facilitate research to better understand dynamic canyon processes, advocate for science-based public policy that protects environmental and cultural resources, and educate the public and decision makers about the need to restore Glen Canyon.

From natural bridges to tributary streams, sandstone amphitheaters to cottonwood galleries, Glen Canyon is one of Earth’s most unique, stunning, and inspiring places.

This landscape is already showing us the scope of restoration that is possible if we only give it a chance.

Last week, the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) announced emergency measures to prop up the elevation of Lake Powell reservoir.

“Federal officials are taking matters into their own hands here,” reports Alex Hager who covers water for member station . “They are taking a huge amount of water from a different reservoir upstream [Flaming Gorge Reservoir] and sending it down to Powell. They are also ratcheting back the amount of water that gets sent out of Lake Powell into the Grand Canyon and towards cities like Las Vegas, Phoenix, and Los Angeles.”

Are these changes enough to prevent Glen Canyon Dam from failing? GCI’s Eric Balken sees BOR’s action as “a Band-Aid solution for a gaping wound. It’s a short term measure that does not get at the root of the problem, which is overconsumption of water.”

When filmmakers Will Buckley and Diego Riley had the chance to join Glen Canyon Institute on a trip to Glen Canyon in 2022, it became clear that the moment required an update to the story of Glen Canyon.

Growing up, the two had heard the mythos of Glen Canyon—it was a Garden of Eden banished beneath 150 feet of water, a place they would never get to see. And yet, the Glen Canyon that they experienced was full of life, restoring to an almost natural state with flora and fauna coming back.

The documentary What the River Knows is what emerged: an inspiring, hopeful, and authentic film about the Glen Canyon we are seeing today.

“Hiking through these canyons,” Buckley describes, “standing in cottonwood forests and canopies 50 feet overhead, knowing that just two decades before, you would have been 80 feet under water… It’s a truly otherworldly experience.”

For the next two weeks, GCI is hosting film screenings across Colorado and New Mexico in partnership with and other local organizations including and . All events will open with Crow Canyon’s film, Glen Canyon Rising.

“It’s just a really great opportunity to come and connect over a shared love of our rivers and to see an inspirational unfolding that we don’t really get to see very often in the current environmental landscape,” says Buckley.

Between 3/14 and 3/26, What the River Knows will be screening in Durango, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Taos, Cortez, Boulder, Fort Collins, Denver, and Grand Junction.

Come on the San Juan River with Glen Canyon Institute, , and this summer!

Every year, GCI runs a river trip in the Colorado Basin so that we can share with you all our work in the landscape that we do it in. This year, from May 29th - June 2nd, we will be on the San Juan River from Mexican Hat to Clay Hills, floating through high canyon walls and sweeping gooseneck turns.

Over the course of this 5-day, 4-night trip, there will be opportunities for hiking, learning about the history of the region, and taking in spectacular geology, wildlife, and scenery. Towards the end, the impact of Lake Powell reservoir on the San Juan becomes clear as the river flows on top of excess deposited sediment that bury rapids up to 40 feet deep.

Joining us will be special guest Len Necefer! Len will bring to this trip a unique and important perspective—he combines expertise on Tribal sovereignty, policymaking, and environmental advocacy with a deep understanding of the multifaceted stories that rivers can tell.

This trip will be run by Ancient Wayves which is 100% Indigenous owned with a team of guides and staff from different Indigenous backgrounds. What better way to explore this river than with knowledgeable guides who are also connected to the region through ancestral heritage?
