There's a new ED-Q CDE article up on the Journal website!

For an ED-Q in training, there is a strong focus on how to determine deviations before you’re let loose into the wild. These deviations are important aspects of protocol compliance, especially concerning an Emergency Dispatcher’s critical impact on caller and responder safety. However, inexperienced ED-Qs who are eager to have their own impact can easily fall into a pattern of providing unnecessarily punitive feedback.

If your focus is to “make your mark” by excessively marking up your case reviews, you may neglect the overarching goal of achieving quality improvement. Instead of encouraging Emergency Dispatchers’ growth, harsh feedback breeds shame, which leads to burnout— not motivation. With each heavy-handed evaluation, you can create an environment of crippling anxiety instead of empowerment.

Usually, as you gain experience as an ED-Q, you start to make better decisions, trusting Emergency Dispatchers to make their own good decisions. That’s the sweet spot where case review becomes effective.

Today our very own Bonni Stockman, IAED ETC Program Coordinator, received the Utah NENA Rion Philips Lifetime Achievement Award!

Way to go, Caitlyn!

The recent actions of Weld County 911 Dispatcher Caitlyn Adamson helped save a life! In August, Adamson answered a call reporting an individual had overdosed. The instructions she gave to the caller and first responders helped the individual survive. For her effort, Adamson received a Lifesaver Award from the Weld County Department of Public Safety Communications. Great job, Caitlyn! In this line of work, it’s clear that what you don’t know can kill you. Dialing 911 not only gets help on the way, but when functioning at its best, it’s an instant connection to the instructions that can save your life.

Fortunately, the Fire Priority Dispatch System (FPDS) is designed, tested, and proven to provide the detailed instructions a caller couldn’t have envisioned needing. That’s especially true of the latest instructions added in the Fire v8.3 Spring Release to guide a caller entrapped (sometimes in a flame-filled vehicle) with no known escape due to compromised or potentially failing electronic door opening mechanisms.

The International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) has studied several of these incidents, observing a connection to primarily electric vehicles (EVs), though this electronic component failure may not be limited to EVs (data collection still in progress).

Were you aware that the IAED has revised CPR instructions for newborns (Protocol N) and infants (Protocol A)?

Approximately 5% to 10% of newborn infants need help to begin breathing at birth, and approximately 1% need advanced resuscitative measures to restore cardiorespiratory function.

Addressing these scenarios, the Medical Priority Dispatch System (MPDS) directs the EMD to begin instructions on Protocol N: Airway/Arrest/Choking (Unconscious) – Newborn/Neonate < 1 day. This provides a unique pathway specifically for newborn/neonates— recently redefined from “< 30 days” to “< 24 hours” old. This distinction reflects the significant physiological differences between a newly born infant still transitioning after birth and an infant who has already established independent respiration.

On this the final day of National Su***de Prevention Month, we'd like to remind Emergency Dispatchers across the country that the public is counting on you to know what to do on a call with someone who is actively suicidal.

According to the survey of more than 1,500 Americans, 73% believe that dispatchers receive specialized training to manage su***de risk calls. However, only a fraction of the tens of thousands of Emergency Dispatchers in the United States have received such specialized training.

In honor of September being National Su***de Prevention Month, we at the IAED surveyed over 1,500 Americans to gauge the public’s understanding of su***de and how it intersects with 911.

Over 60% of respondents expressed that they would be confident in recognizing su***de warning signs such as someone talking about feeling trapped or in unbearable pain, increased use of alcohol or drugs, and sleeping too little or too much.
