Utah is grieving again. There are moments when words simply aren’t enough. This is one of them. Yesterday, while fighting the Widemouth 2 Fire near Richfield, a firefighting helicopter went down with two members of the firefighting community aboard. Once again, our public safety family is facing the kind of loss that reaches far beyond one incident, one crew, one agency, or one community.

To their families, we are holding space for you in a grief most of us cannot begin to understand. To their friends, their crews, and their fire family.. who stood beside them, worked beside them, laughed with them, trusted them, and will now feel their absence every time the next call comes in.. we see you. To the dispatchers who heard the radio traffic, the responders who wanted desperately to get to them, the incident commanders forced to make impossible decisions, and every person still working the fire while carrying the weight of what happened..we see you!

This summer has not been kind to Utah’s public safety family. We have grieved firefighters. We have watched communities burn. We have watched the people who run toward danger experience loss after loss… and somehow, they continue to show up for the next person who needs them.

But those who spend their lives showing up for everyone else deserve people who will show up for them, too. So please hear us when we say this:

No matter what patch is on your shoulder.
No matter what agency is on your apparatus.
No matter what county, city, center, crew, or corner of this state you call home.

If you are hurting, Utah NENA is here. If your center needs support, we are here. If your crews need to know someone is thinking about them, we are here. If you just need someone who understands what it means to carry the things public safety professionals carry, WE ARE HERE.

Anytime. Anywhere.

Because there are no jurisdictional boundaries when one of our own is hurting. Tonight, our hearts are with the lives lost, the families who love them, their fire family, and every person feeling the weight of this loss. May we honor them by taking care of the people still standing beside us. 🖤

At this point, we’re starting to think Central 911 needs to open a maternity wing. 😂🚑👶 Like are y’all even trying to make it to the hospital anymore? Another baby has officially made their grand entrance… and once again, a dispatcher was there to help bring them safely into the world.

Congratulations to Olivia M. for staying calm, coaching a very nervous dad, and helping welcome a beautiful baby girl on July 24. 💛 Honestly, we’re beginning to wonder if the stork has Central 911 on speed dial. 😅

To all the dispatchers who somehow keep adding “honorary labor & delivery nurse” to their résumé… we see you, we appreciate you, and we kindly ask the babies of Utah to at least consider the hospital as their first destination. 😂 Amazing work, Olivia! Congratulations on another life-changing save. 💛👏

Another 9-1-1 Baby Has Arrived!

The stork has been keeping our dispatchers busy lately! Early in the morning on July 24, Olivia M. helped coach a calm (and undoubtedly nervous!) dad through the delivery of his beautiful baby girl before first responders could arrive.

From answering the call to giving step-by-step instructions, Olivia was there every second, helping welcome a brand-new baby into the world.

This is just one of several baby deliveries we've helped with recently. While we'd much rather babies wait until they get to the hospital, we're always ready when they decide they have other plans.

Huge shout-out to Olivia M. for staying calm under pressure and helping make this a story the family will never forget.

Today, the hearts of Utah’s first responder family are heavy.

In the wake of the devastating flash floods in Wayne County, we mourn the heartbreaking loss of Provo Fire Captain Long, his wife, and their three sons. Our hearts are with their loved ones, the entire Provo Fire Department, and their daughter who now faces an unimaginable road ahead.

There are no words that can make sense of a loss like this. There are no words that can fill the silence left behind. But there is one thing we know to be true: no one grieves alone.

To every firefighter, dispatcher, law enforcement officer, EMT, paramedic, and first responder across Utah—we grieve as one family. When one of us hurts, all of us hurt. We stand shoulder to shoulder, lifting one another through the darkest moments.

To Captain Long’s family, friends, and brothers and sisters in this first responder family: please know that Utah NENA stands beside you. We are holding you in our hearts, honoring your loss, and sending every ounce of love and strength we have.

In moments like these, hug your people a little tighter. Tell them you love them. Check on your coworkers. Reach out to the ones who always seem to be the strongest. Sometimes the strongest shoulders carry the heaviest burdens.

Today, we mourn.

This summer has tested Utah in every direction. Wildfires have threatened homes and communities across our state. Now, many of those same areas are facing flash flooding, washed-out roads, and rapidly changing emergencies. While the disasters may change, one thing never does…

The voice behind the headset.

Behind every evacuation, every road closure, every rescue, and every call for help is a 9-1-1 professional working to bring order to chaos. Dispatchers are coordinating first responders, answering frightened callers, adapting to rapidly evolving incidents, and doing it all with calm professionalism—even when the next call could change everything.

To every Utah dispatcher: WE SEE YOU. We know these prolonged incidents are exhausting. We know the emotional and mental weight doesn’t disappear when the shift ends. Please remember that you are not carrying it alone.

Utah NENA is here for you. Whether your center needs support, resources, outreach, or simply someone to listen, our dispatch family stands ready to help however we can.

Take care of yourselves. Lean on one another. Ask for help when you need it. There is strength in this profession, and there is strength in each other. Thank you for continuing to answer every call, no matter what the forecast brings. 💛💛💛
