Advocating for Resources and Programming

Great advocacy starts with a great story. This session uses insights from Clay Hebert’s TEDxReno talk “The Best Way To Answer ‘So What Do You Do?’” to help you articulate your program’s value with clarity, confidence, and purpose so you can build support and spark engagement. We’ll learn how to craft powerful, concise messaging that helps people instantly understand what you do—and why it matters.

The Utah Department of Cultural & Community Engagement has identified museums as a natural proponent to spread the word about the . America's Potluck is an opportunity for neighbors to join with one another to share a fun, communal meal, creating a sense of connection and belonging and fostering interactions among people from all walks of life.

As community centers for the state, we encourage museums to join us in promoting this celebration! Your institution is not expected to host its own potluck celebration—though what a great opportunity to engage with the community! We invite you to engage with the spirit of the celebration by highlighting pertinent collections and stories. Here are four suggested prompts to get your social media posts going:

Who would you invite to potluck?
What recipe would you share?
What local ingredient is important to your museum/community?
How will you set the table?

Feel free to use these or to put your own spin on it! Need inspiration? Check out to see what they have shared!

Join Utah Teaching Artist Lapita Frewin at the Chase Home Museum of Utah Folk Arts for a hands-on workshop that connects material cultures to contemporary art practices with Native American sandpainting. Lapita brings her extensive knowledge as an accomplished community teaching artist to this unique educational opportunity. Together, we will examine material culture in a hands-on workshop and make connections between traditional and contemporary adaptations of this specialized folk practice.

Come prepared to learn-by-doing and work to connect natural materials and cultural concepts. Walk away with new ideas and connections to contemporary Indigenous perspectives and ways to bring unique educational enrichment to your own museum spaces. After we finish at the museum, continue to network with your colleagues at an optional pay-your-own-way dinner at Vessel Kitchen (905 E 900 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84105).
