Andie is joining RMIC this summer as an intern, from the University of Idaho. Her reason for being here says everything. She’s from this community, and she wants to spend her summer giving back to it by working to correct injustices that should never have happened in the first place.
That kind of intention is exactly what this work needs. Welcome, Andie, we’re so glad you’re here.

The courtroom is where the public sees the work. It’s not where the work begins.
Every exoneration effort starts with years of investigation, including forensic science and expert analysis, records review, and fact-finding.
Before a motion is ever filed, significant time and resources have already been invested in the search for truth. Here’s how RMIC dedicated those resources in 2025.

We’re excited to welcome Crystal to the RMIC team this summer! A student at the University of Utah, Crystal was drawn to our work because she wanted to explore “a side of the justice system that a lot of positions will never touch.” We’re grateful to have her with us. Welcome, Crystal!

Memorial Day is a time to honor those whose lives were taken in service to others and to reflect on the meaning of freedom in this country.
At RMIC, we see the value of freedom every day, especially for the innocent people who have had years, decades, and entire chapters of their lives taken from them by wrongful conviction.
This weekend, as we gather with those we love, we’re reminded that freedom should never be taken for granted and that justice matters because every stolen year matters.

22 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit.
Ashley Bennett’s conviction was built on coerced testimony. When the courts had no way to hear his innocence claim, RMIC helped change the law.
In 2019, we worked with the Nevada Legislature to create the state’s factual innocence statute, and Ashley became the first person to file under it.
When a health crisis made time critical, RMIC secured his release. Two weeks later, he was home with his family.
RMIC is the only organization in Nevada fighting wrongful convictions. Right now, every donation to our Nevada work is doubled through June 30 thanks to the Nevada Bar Foundation.
If this work matters to you, now is the time to make it go further. https://Inkd.in/gc5x-rJm

National Registry of Exonerations has officially added Adrian Gordon’s case. His story is one everyone should know.
Adrian was 20 years old when police decided he was guilty and stopped looking anywhere else.
He was convicted in 2001 based on unreliable witness testimony, missing evidence, and a second suspect detectives never disclosed to the defense.
RMIC began fighting for Adrian in 2004. After two decades of investigation, appeals, DNA testing, and a
71-page post-conviction petition, his conviction was vacated in January 2026. The case was dismissed this April.
Adrian lost more than 22 years to a conviction the system ultimately could not defend.
Now, his wrongful conviction is part of the official national record. It deserves to be read, shared, and remembered.

Meet Sage, one of our summer interns!
Sage is a student at the University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law, and she’s spending her summer with RMIC because she understands that wrongful convictions don’t just harm the individual. They undermine the integrity of the entire legal system.
We’re so glad to have her with us this summer. Welcome, Sage!

Congratulations to Lauren Shurman on being recognized as one of Utah Business Magazine’s Women to Watch.

Lauren’s commitment to justice extends well beyond the courtroom. Through her pro bono work with RMIC, she played an instrumental role in vacating a wrongful conviction after nearly 20 years of investigation and litigation. This is a result that speaks to both her skill and her character as an attorney.

We were honored to welcome Lauren as a speaker at this year’s Hope for the Innocent Breakfast, and we are proud to have her in our corner. Recognition like this is a reflection of the integrity and dedication she brings to everything she does. Congratulations, Lauren!

Justice work doesn’t only happen in courtrooms.
Sometimes it happens around a poker table on a patio.
We were honored to join Michael Best for an evening of cards, conversation, and community this past Friday, where every rebuy directly supported RMIC’s fight for the wrongfully convicted.
We’re deeply grateful for partners who invest in justice not just professionally, but personally.
