The Federal Transportation Department is launching a “Freedom to Drive” campaign. They sent this letter out to all Governor’s yesterday. They are targetting bike lanes in DC for removal and suggesting states do the same. The letter specifically asks them to, Identify roads with the worst congestion, build new roads and maxmimize road capacity, and recover roadway capacity from other purposes to support driving (such as removing bike lanes). Let know that “Maximizing capacity” should mean moving more people, not just more cars.

Federal funding for walking and biking is under threat.

Senior members of Congress want the upcoming Surface Transportation Reauthorization bill to fund only “traditional infrastructure—roads and bridges,” with no support for walking or biking paths.

These investments are critical to improving safety, expanding mobility, supporting local economies, and reducing congestion. Without federal support, Utah communities cannot build the connected, multimodal transportation networks we all rely on.

We organized a meeting with last week, urging him to protect and strengthen federal active transportation investments. Now we need your help. Call Senator Curtis’s office at (202) 224-5251 and ask him to protect federal funding for walking and biking in the reauthorization bill.

Safer streets are under threat in Salt Lake City, and SB 242 sets a precedent that could impact cities across Utah. By prioritizing vehicle speed over proven safety tools like bike lanes and traffic calming, this bill moves our state backward when we should be designing streets for people.

We need your voice. SB 242 will be heard in the Senate Transportation Committee this Monday, Feb 9 at 3:40 PM in Room 220 of the Senate Building. Showing up and speaking out matters. Let lawmakers know this is a bad idea for Salt Lake City and every community in Utah.
