A farewell message from our Executive Director:

After four incredible years serving as Executive Director of Friends for Sight, I have accepted a new opportunity to lead an organization serving survivors of interpersonal violence. It is a cause that has shaped much of my career and is one that is very meaningful to me.

As I reflect on my time at Friends for Sight, I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve alongside our Board, staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners. Together, we have expanded access to vision care for thousands of Utahns, strengthened partnerships across the state, grown our programs, and positioned the organization for long-term success. I am especially proud of the foundation we have built over the past four years and the dedicated team that will continue carrying this work forward. More than anything, my time at Friends for Sight has reinforced my belief that everyone, regardless of income, background, or where they live, deserves access to quality vision care.

I want our community to know that Friends for Sight is exceptionally well-positioned for its next chapter. The organization is led by an outstanding team, supported by a dedicated Board of Directors, and guided by a clear strategic vision. There are exciting opportunities ahead, and I have no doubt Friends for Sight will continue to grow and serve Utah communities with excellence. Over the coming weeks, I will work closely with the Board to ensure a seamless leadership transition, but the team already has the momentum, talent, and commitment to continue moving the mission forward.

My last day with Friends for Sight will be September 18, 2026. During the transition, Board Chair Steven Johnson ([email protected]) and Interim Executive Director Julia DeLeeuw ([email protected]) will serve as the primary points of contact. The Board will begin its search for a new Executive Director immediately.

To everyone who has partnered with us, invested in our mission, volunteered, advocated, or entrusted us with your support, thank you. It has been an honor to serve this organization and the communities we work alongside. I look forward to seeing Friends for Sight continue to thrive and create opportunities for more Utahns to access the vision care they deserve.

With deepest gratitude,
Jamie

Last week our team and our volunteers from Arizona College of Nursing helped with CareFair. This is a two day event organized by the Junior League of Salt Lake City for families needing routine medical, vision, and women’s services along with community assistance information. We were grateful to be involved in this event and to provide free vision screening, reading glasses and eye pressure screenings to members of the community.

A sweet note from a member of our team after the fact:

Good morning!
I thought I would share the final CARE Fair numbers for both days with y'all, if you're interested!
SPOT Screenings: 295, with 125 referrals; Tonometer: 101, with 19 referrals; and Reading Glasses: We gave out 65 pairs! Thanks again to everyone for their help with this event!

Ogden Preschool Screening Volunteers have wrapped up another successful screening season!

Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and community partners, we accomplished an incredible amount this year:

3,034 children screened

393 referrals made to help connect children with needed services

101 schools visited

246 volunteer hours contributed

The impact of these screenings extends far beyond the numbers. Parents and preschool directors continue to express their appreciation for the valuable support and early intervention opportunities our program provides.

“Through the screening process we have identified at least 20% of children who need further vision evaluations, and most of those actually needed glasses or other services.
-Karen Martin, DSD Head Start

Thank you to everyone who helped make this important work possible and for helping young learners get the best possible start! S/O Peggy and Karen

Celebrating Utah’s Vision Champions at Utah Optometric Association!

The energy at this year’s Utah Optometric Association conference was nothing short of inspiring. Friends For Sight had the privilege of recognizing several outstanding volunteer doctors whose generosity has helped bring free vision care to Utah children who need it most.
We honored Dr. Michael Judkins, who volunteered at four separate SightFests and provided follow-up care for students referred from our Ogden and Weber School District events. We also recognized Dr. Jenna O’Brien, Dr. Jason Foote, and Dr. Steven Blake for their leadership and volunteer service at our inaugural Washington County School District SightFest, including recruiting additional doctors to join the effort. Dr. Kent Albrecht was recognized for both volunteering and helping dispense glasses to students.
The excitement didn’t stop there. We welcomed 35 new vision care professionals who signed up to volunteer with Friends For Sight for the upcoming school year. Our new “Optical and Infinity & Beyond” shirt (inspired by a suggestion from Dr. Jarrod Davies )was also a hit, raising more than $600 in donations.
Most inspiring of all was the spirit of collaboration. Doctors, technicians, students, and providers eagerly introduced us to new colleagues, shared ideas, and looked for ways to expand access to vision care across Utah. The future of vision care in our state is bright, and we are grateful to the Utah Optometric Association for their partnership and support. Together, we’re helping more Utah children see a brighter future.

One simple way to help children explore their world with confidence is through vision care. When children can see clearly, they’re better prepared to learn, explore, and grow into the future ahead of them. That’s why early vision screenings matter—they help catch small challenges early so kids can keep discovering their world with confidence. A simple check today can help open the door to a lifetime of curiosity, learning, and possibility.
