Can we have your attention, please...
As announced on Fet by MrChristhulhu 1 day ago (https://fetlife.com/groups/36738/group_posts/12746479)
After much discussion and soul searching, after 6 and a half years we have made the decision to stop renewing the charter for the Utah chapter of the National Leather Association. We discussed this at length at our last general meeting, and those present gave feedback and support, while those not present also weighed in by their lack of presence at that meeting…
Effective July 1st, if you wish to continue supporting NLA-International, you'll need to apply or renew through their website at http://nla-international.com/indiv.html
There are a few reasons for this decision, which we want to make crystal clear for everyone who has been involved over the years. We really do appreciate those who have given their love and support to the chapter.
First and foremost, there no longer seems to be as strong a desire for membership-based and dues-based organizations like this any longer. This is true not only of leather groups, but we've seen interest in membership vanilla clubs have also dwindled in the past few years. This is probably due in large part to social media like FetLife and Facebook making it easier to find others of a like mind and to organize events without needing the network that clubs once offered. The world has changed a lot in the past 10 years.
Those of us on the executive council have watched general interest in being an NLA member steadily decline over the past 2-3 years. Where we once had 100+ members, we've struggled in the past couple of years just to maintain the minimum required numbers to keep the NLA-I charter active. We've been seeing multiple other NLA chapters also closing in the past 6 months, so we know this isn't only a local phenomenon.
The observations we've drawn are that people are primarily interested only in events: parties, educational classes, and weekend conferences or retreats. Attendance remains high (and in fact, climbing) for all those things, regardless of dwindling memberships.
So, for those lamenting the loss of the awesome NLA parties, here's the good news: The Fungeon will continue to operate and throw events. This includes more of those fabulous parties, weekend intensive educational classes and retreats from time to time, and even munches. Because we strongly believe in a philosophy of opt-in rather than opt-out, if you want to continue being involved in Fungeon parties, go join The Fungeon Fetlife group (https://fetlife.com/groups/173947) as this will very possibly be one of the last posts made here on the NLA:Utah page.
(There will be a page/group set up very soon as well for those who don't do the Fet thing...)
We’ll continue as much of the positive ethos that NLA-Utah has held to over the years, but without any of the complicated membership, dues, and red-tape linked to the larger NLA-International club.
One of the other challenges we've increasingly had to deal with is that Fetlife is also no longer as reliable for marketing and announcing events. They’re just not notifying group members as diligently as they once did. A number of people have told us that they had no idea there was a party coming up even after we've 1:posted an event, 2:announced that on the NLAU group the event, then 3:announced on multiple other groups the event, and 4:announced on Facebook the same information. We can read the writing on the wall, so we're going to also resurrect our old Mail Chimp mailing list for those who want to opt in (http://eepurl.com/dz2qoz) and we'll use other communication channels as they arise as well.
Now, suffice to say, Fungeon parties and events are only successful with the generous support of others. We quite literally can't do it without your help. Your assistance is more valuable to us than your money.
If you're one of those who have been there for us in the past and you have a desire to continue being there, we will reward your assistance. If you're one of the many who tell us every time how much you love parties at The Fungeon, or that they are the only parties you go to or feel completely safe at (all comments we’ve heard recently) then please consider stepping up to the plate a couple of times a year.
It doesn't take a lot of slavish work, just a little time helping to set up the day of, a shift as a DM during the party, help with cleanup right after, or preparing and bringing a dish the night of, and these are just a few examples. For what you put in, we will knock down the cost of your entry to the party, as far down as FREE.
And it shouldn’t have to be the same people every time, because trust me that gets old pretty quick. Ideally we’d like to throw more parties and events than we have in the past, but that will depend entirely on you, our adoring public.
If 5-10 people are willing to step forward and help, the events will be amazing! But if no one steps up and helps out, then events might get cancelled or simply called off. So as they say, put your money where your mouth is, and save your money in the process. Contact us by email at [email protected] or send a message on Fetlife to MrChristhulhu (https://fetlife.com/users/3325148) if you are willing and able to volunteer some time at the next Fungeon party, and we’ll start planning our next party now!
And on that note, The Fungeon is also open and available for other groups to hold parties, classes, or other events. If your group needs a venue, or if you’re wanting to branch out from your usual spot for a special evening, we are eager to negotiate that scene with you. ;) For events that raise funds with a door donation for your group (parties, for example) our rates will be based on attendance so your group doesn’t end up taking a wash on it. For events that do not generate funds (classes or receptions, for example) we’ll keep it all very, very affordable for you. Contact us at [email protected] if you’re interested.
