Adopt-A-Native-Elder

Adopt-A-Native-Elder Humanitarian organization, serving traditional Navajo Elders for 40 years.
(282)

The Adopt-A-Native-Elder Program started through the efforts of Linda Myers, of Park City, Utah, and Grace Smith Yellowhammer, a traditional Dine' woman. In the late 1980's Linda, an artist, was very moved by a Rug Show displaying the Navajo (or Dine' as they prefer to be called) weavings of the Elders of Northern Arizona. Touched by the stories of the Dine' people as told by Grace and Rose Hullig

an during that Rug Show, Linda was soon very involved in gathering donated food, clothing and simple medicines and was driving to the reservation in Northern Arizona to deliver them to Elders living traditionally on the Land.

Today’s thank you letter is from Gladys Luna. Gladys is a 91 year old Elder who attends the Kayenta Food Run.

Gladys writes:

To Adopt-A-Native-Elder,

Sorry for not answering back to you people to thank you for sending me the $200 firewood voucher. I just got around to doing this today.

I have a hard time writing back to you people from the state of Utah and other places to tell them I say thank you to all who help and donate.

We don’t have a car to go to the post office or store, we have to wait for somebody to come visit us. So, finally they did and that's why I’m writing a thank you letter back to you.

You saw me that day when you came for the Food Run day, but I’m having a hard time with my health and it’s not easy.

But anyway, I thank you people and here is my thank you letter to you. Not much to say about Kayenta. I’ll close here now.

Love,
Gladys Luna

We've returned from the spring Food Runs and are full of gratitude for the Elders we serve, the family members who care for them selflessly throughout the year, and all of the volunteers and sponsors who make the Food Runs possible.

In honor of Adopt-A-Native-Elder's 40th year of service on the reservation every Elder in the program received a 40th anniversary program hat.

We're looking forward to sharing more photos and stories from the Food Runs, and we're looking forward to more 40th year celebrations with our community through out the year!

Come and join us at the warehouse!

Thank you to all of the volunteers who gave their time and hands to serve the Elders on the Food Runs to Navajo Mountain, Kayenta, and Oljato. Your commitment to service makes Adopt-A-Native-Elder's mission to bring together hands of different cultures a reality.

Thank you to all of the family members and caretakers of the Elders who bring them to the Food Runs and care for them daily throughout the year. It is an honor and a priviledge to spend time with your Elders and we are grateful for all you do.

And, thank you to all of our warehouse volunteers in Salt Lake City and the volunteers joining us on Food Runs over the coming month, we have a lot of work to do before completing the spring Food Runs to Elders in Many Farms, Forest Lake, Tsaile, Leupp, Dilkon, Birdsprings, Tolani Lake, Big Mountain, Sanders, and Teesto.

Stay tuned for more photos and updates!

The Food Runs are just around the corner and we can't wait to bring our community together and serve the Elders in person on their land.

Throughout the winter months, Adopt-A-Native-Elder provides all the Elders in the program with Basha's Food Cards and Firewood vouchers so that they have the resources they need to survive the harshest months of the year. Today, with fuel prices and the cost of everyday necessities rising, the distribution of Food Cards and Firewood vouchers is more important than ever.

In 2026, Adopt-A-Native-Elder hopes to distribute more than $2,250,000 in Food Cards and Firewood Vouchers so that the Elders we cherish may continue to sustain themselves in their traditional way on their homelands.

Today’s thank you letter is from Ruby Hoskie. Ruby is a 92 year old Elder who attends the Forest Lake Food Run.

Ruby writes through a family member:

To Adopt-A-Native-Elder,

I, Ruby Hoskie, want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for being there through hard times helping me out with many things, especially the wood money that I receive. This past winter was really cold, not much snow but the weather was really cold. I purchased woods so I kept myself warm. Thank you so much. Sometimes I have no one to write letters for me. I live with only my grandson who takes care of me. I just wanted to say thank you!

Love,

Ruby Hoskie

The Spring Food Runs are almost here! If you haven’t ordered for the Elder you support yet, get your orders in A.S.A.P. through the website, www.AnElder.org or by calling the office at (801) 474-0535.
This month every Elder in the program is receiving a $200 firewood voucher and a $150 Basha’s Food Card from Adopt-A-Native-Elder to make sure they all have enough wood and food to make it through the remaining weeks of winter. If you do not support an Elder, consider donating to the firewood fund to help make sure all the Elders have the gift of warmth and nourishment during the remaining cold nights!
