HB257 has passed the Senate and now heads to back to the House due to it being amended in the Senate. After that it goes to the governor for a signature or veto. We encourage everyone to tell Governor Cox to veto this harmful and dangerous bill. If he signs it or a potential veto is overridden the state of Utah can expect a lawsuit almost immediately afterwards.

HB 257, a bill with no aim other than to harm trans people in Utah just passed the House Business and Labor Committee with a vote of
12 for 3 against and 1 absent
The only Republican to vote against the bill was Rep. Thurston of Provo. It now moves to a full house vote and Utah moves 10 steps back because now domestic violence shelters will face even further funding problems, bathroom and public spaces will explicitly deny trans people. Discrimination and explicitly hateful laws saw a victory in Utah tonight.

Discrimination makes gains in Utah today, as HB 257, a bill aimed at denying public facilities such as bathrooms, domestic violence support, and r**e crisis centers moved closer to passing today.

It has moved to the House Business and Labor Committee where it will recieve a vote before that committee tomorrow, January 17th, at 2 PM. If it passes there it moves to a full vote in the house.

Today marks the first day of the Utah Legislative Session, 45 days where state law makers propose and vote on new state law. There are several bills that will significantly harm trans people in our state.

The most significant of which is HB257, a bill which if enacted would effectively ban trans people from all restrooms in publicly funded buildings, r**e crisis centers, institutional victim services, and enforce a code of putting trans people in the wrong correctional facilities. This bill is simply malice in it's entirety, it is proposed for no reason other than to make an entire group of people second class citizens.
