License and Microchip Your Pet Next Saturday at the Fire Station.

Salt Lake County Animal Services will hold a microchip and licensing clinic at the canyon fire station, 5025 E. Emigration Canyon Road, from 10:00 a.m. to noon on Saturday July 29. Licensing is required by law in the state of Utah, and Salt Lake County provides a free microchip for every licensed pet.

A microchip is a tiny device that is implanted under an animal’s skin. It carries a unique number that is linked to the owner’s information. If your pet is lost, a shelter or vet can scan the chip to reunite you. It’s a painless and effective way to help keep our pets safe. A microchip doesn’t replace a tag and collar, but for a lost animal it can make all the difference in getting home quickly and safely.

Licensing charges will be $25 for fixed pets and $50 for intact ones. Seniors’ licensing will be $10 for fixed pets. Please bring your rabies certificate with you.

MSD Strategic Plan Survey: msd.utah.gov/residentsurvey

As a new local district, the Greater Salt Lake Municipal Services District (MSD) is embarking on its first-ever strategic planning effort.

In partnership with our district membership that includes five metro townships, one town and unincorporated Salt Lake County, we are seeking your assistance to help to drive how to best support each community over the next several years. Please share your insights on community priorities through the resident online survey.

The survey is open and will be online until Wednesday, June 9, 2021. The survey will take about eight minutes to fill out. We will not be collecting any identifiable personal information. To take the survey and see video messages from your mayor or council member, please go online: msd.utah.gov/residentsurvey

Thank you for your participation. Your input is so important to help guide the future of the municipal services the MSD provides to its community. The Chippers Are Coming!

This year we’ll be splitting our canyon-wide chipping service into two events. Unified Fire Authority crews will serve the main canyon, Pinecrest, Killyons, and most side road neighborhoods (including Emigration Place) during the last week of June (6/28 – 7/2). They’ll visit Emigration Oaks, Acorn Hills and Quad Road the following week (7/5 – 7/9). This is your opportunity to trim and thin the defensive space around your home without having to make a trip to the landfill. Just stack your brush neatly at the roadside for processing into chips that will be left in place.

If you’d like to participate—and we very much hope you will—here’s what to do:

• Have your brush piled by the roadside (main road or any secondary canyon road) by the first morning of your service period.

• Stack your brush in a single direction so the pile is easy to unload.

• No material larger than 12 inches in diameter.

• Be careful to not obstruct road shoulders or bike lanes.

• Please don’t bring out additional material after the crew has passed. It will not be processed.

• To be sure we don't miss your pile, please let us know you plan to participate by emailing your street address to [email protected].

When you’re finished, please consider sharing with us your time and any expenses you incurred (arborist services, for instance) at the same email address. We can count your time and spending toward the township’s annual Firewise requirement for wildfire risk reduction. Maintaining this certification helps lower home fire insurance premiums and qualifies the township for state support of wildland firefighting costs.

Finally, keep in mind that our schedule is subject to change if our chipping crew is called off on firefighting duty. In that event, updates will be posted on the community council website (www.emigrationcanyon.org).

Thank-you all for your personal investment in reducing wildfire risk!

Don’t Forget Your Wildfire Risk and Perspectives Survey

Hopefully you’ve already completed and returned the wildfire risk awareness survey questionnaire that was recently mailed to all canyon homes. This study by researchers at the U.S. Forest Service will assess our community’s knowledge of wildfire, our attitudes toward fire-related risk, and our readiness to respond to a fire emergency. The resulting data will help the township benchmark its progress in preparing for a serious wildfire event. It will also help county, state, and federal agencies develop more effective programs to inform, motivate and prepare at-risk communities like ours.

If you misplaced the first mailing, don’t worry. A second questionnaire will be mailed in the next few weeks. Please be sure to fill it out and return it in the enclosed, stamped envelope. The insights we hope to gain will be invaluable in preparing Emigration Canyon for future fires.

Myrtle spurge is spreading in Emigration Canyon - please read this PSA!

Last night several pre-schoolers in Salt Lake County had midnight emergency room visits as a result of earlier contact with Myrtle Spurge (𝘌𝘶𝘱𝘩𝘰𝘳𝘣𝘪𝘢 𝘮𝘺𝘳𝘴𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘴) during a pre-school nature "scavenger hunt" field trip (kids had been instructed to collect pieces of plants which is in general a terrible idea; so these children were just following orders from their teachers). It doesn't seem to matter how much publicity this state noxious w**d species receives, too many people along the Wasatch Front (including emergency room doctors) still seem to be unaware of the reactions people can have when coming into contact with the milky sap of this non-native species that has been rapidly taking over our northern Utah foothills flora over the past 20+ years (and as a result of escapees from its prior widespread use as an ornamental; it was even promoted as a "waterwise" plant.) It tends to bloom before most of our native species and it is in full bloom now. Don't try to cut or remove this plant without taking precautions (gloves, goggles, protective clothing).

"Day 2
Today, head to the eastern foothills above the University of Utah and explore two of Salt Lake’s smaller canyons. Take a 20-minute drive into Emigration Canyon for breakfast on the tree-shaded patio at Ruth's Diner, with the sounds of the babbling Emigration Creek in the background. Order Ruth’s “famous mile high” biscuits with house-made jam, and then walk them off at Red Butte Garden, a sprawling park known for its native plants."

Over the past few decades, Utah’s capital has departed from its solid pioneer roots to become a creative urban getaway.

You can help Feed Utah on Saturday, March 20

Feed Utah is a broad-based coalition of government, non-profit, faith-based, and corporate entities dedicated to helping those in need of food assistance in the state of Utah. It’s estimated that 511,000 Utahns will face hunger this year, many for the first time due to economic fallout resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. One in five Utah children are unsure where their next meal will come from.

On Saturday, March 20, Feed Utah will conduct a statewide drive to collect as much non-perishable food as possible for distribution through Utah Food Bank and its network of 203 partner agencies across the state. Emigration Canyon households can support this effort by bringing a plastic grocery bag of food items to our collection point at the canyon fire station between 6:00 a.m. and noon on the 20th.

Most needed items include:
• Peanut Butter
• Canned Stew
• Canned Tuna
• Canned Chicken
• Macaroni and Cheese
No glass containers, please!

If you would like to be involved in this event please visit www.justserve.org to sign up for volunteer opportunities. To support the Feed Utah food drive with a financial donation to the Utah Food Bank, please click here.
